Dude, he clearly did notice the joke. Its just that the joke is homophobic. I am not sure how you can claim someone is over sensitive when the story clearly implies that homosexuality is so gross that it is sickening and causes one to vomit. Sadly, there are also several commenters on here who also are apparently sickened by the concept of homosexuality as well. It is disappointing.

Actually ancient china was less homophobic than modern society. The reaction I think is more because bu le is really ugly. So its not homophobic, its appearance-phobic. Not better, but different lol. And something pretty much everyone is haha.
I was also disappointed with the homophobic response. I never would have thought that in such an awesome book there would be such a disgusting response towards transvestites/gays. And while I every day impatiently wait for updates, this one just left a bad taste in my mouth. I understand that the story is based on ancient China traditions, etc. but to read such sentences in the one of the most interesting books I have ever read it really lessens the whole value of the book.

If an overly perverted youth sees a disgusting figure eye him in such a way (be it male or female) a certain revolted reaction is to be expected. If that youth is heterosexual and the one who woos him is not only the person who’s genitals he burned but also an ugly pedophile of the same sex then it’s no more than logic for the reaction to be more intense.
There has been no reason to assume this same reaction would be displayed if a homosexual couple (be it male or female) would receive the same response in a normal situation.
This shows that the value of the book lessens not by the content but by the connotation you add to said content. Which is sad because it is indeed a great story that doesn’t even consider love a problem between spirit beasts and humans. So why would you think it would form a problem out of love between humans of same sex?
Back in chapter 43, he was clearly still a pedophile with a disgusting appearance and expression but none of the characters expressed a hint of were ever mentioned as sickened when he expressed interest in a 13 year old Xiao Wu.
So apparently him expressing interest in a 13 year old girl is less revolting than him expressing interest in a young man in his 20s by several orders of magnitude. Tang San, Ma Hongjun, and even the guys friend were suddenly sickened by him. Clearly the only variable that changed was now he was interested in a man. I am not going to stop reading the story because of it and I am not someone who gets offended easily, but lets not pretend here it was clearly homophobic.

After Xiao Wu’s fight with (read: annihilation of) Bu Le Tang San specifically told her not to wrap around her enemies anymore (even though she had done that plenty of times before). Furthermore Xiao Wu herself also expressed disgustedness of Bu Le’s pedophilia. Also I mentioned the pervertedness of Fatty (due to his “evil fire”) which caused him to be indoctrinated in an environment surrounded by women. Many factors come in play, mainly age, attractiveness, and intent. My reasoning is as follows: many straight males also feel repulsion toward the “attractive” sex (let’s use your definition of attractive sex), depending on the other party’s attractiveness and intent. Here’s an example, a straight man would probably feel repulsion if a disgusting-looking woman, twice his age, eyeballs his crotch. At least I would shiver. The reason why I challenged your first assumption is because a repulsion is not automatically a case of homophobia, other factors need to be considered: is that person decent/good looking or disgusting looking (attractiveness)? Does that person want to compliment me on my hat/beard/shirt or is that person eyeballing my crotch and want to have sex with me (intent)? Now moving back to the story, I believe that the characters are disgusted by the important factors in play, and not by the fact that Bu Le is homosexual. I can’t of course, not exclude a total possibility of homophobia, but I invite you to consider all relevant factors first, before making a call for homophobia.

It is absolutely normal for readers to view this story with the lenses of the current society where this pedophilic practice is a sin of sins. But I would encourage readers to view it with the lenses of the ancient Chinese society — era that this story takes place. After all, you can’t expect Tan San to bring out a cellphone in the story, nor should you expect the characters to be repulsed by an adult making advances to a 13 years old girl. I am not a historian myself, nor do I major in Ancient Chinese History, but I believe the proper reaction would be for the characters to view the actions of Bu Le making advances to the 13 years old Xiao Wu as sexual harassment instead of pedophilic advances.

What bothers me about this scene is not so much that Fatty is being grossed out (which I can understand, since Bu Le is being described as a fairly repulsive person in and of itself), but that every single person present, including Bu Le’s friend was grossed out. Which can only be explained as a homophobic reation, since I doubt that Bu Le’s friends think that he is a repulsive person.
I also agree with dans that I personally think it’s sick that nobody was grossed out by him being a pedophile but everybody is grossed out when he pretends to be gay.
In ancient China (or even Japan), pedophilia as we know today does not exist. It was common practice for girls to be bethroned as infants and then be married out as brides by the age of 12-14 years old, sometimes to widows in the 30s-40s years of age.
In the current society, it would be sickening. But at the time, the life expectancy was much shorter. If a girl gets married by 18, you would lose 5 precious years, which translates into 2-3 potential pregnancies. This is why I believe none of the characters reacted violently to the pedophilic actions of Bu Lu. They reacted to that scenario the same degree as to how the current society would react to a case of sexual harassment.
Note: I find it truly unfortunate how people view sexual harassment in the current society. It is present everywhere, yet most people are desensitized, especially in investment banking offices and university campuses. But if you find out there’s a pedophile in your neighbourhood, the reaction is 1000x different… I find this sad.
Your argument has a point, however, I do disagree with it. My reason being that, although the setting may be based on ancient China, there are several elements that differ heavily from it, especially in relation to the status of women.
Women in this story can (and frequently do) become warriors and leaders, which, to my knowledge was definitely not the case in ancient China (I do bot believe that a woman could have held a position similar to Bibi Dong’s in ancient China).
Also, while sexual relations at an early age seem to be quite frequent, women seem to have the possibility of choosing their own partner, also (from what has been shown in the story so far) it does not seem to me that child marriage (or what we would consider as such in modern society) is common in the society shown in Douluo Dalu.
If this point differs this vastly from ancient China, then I don’t believe that the fact that marrying young girls (children) in China was common, while homosexuality wasn’t can serve as a reason for the homophobic behaviour that was displayed in this situation (by every single person present – if it had been just Fatty, I would have had no objection).
I think it just comes down to it being a gag joke, i’ve yet to see a gag that should be taken as a serious part of the plot, and most of them are based on offensive things like this. Chinese is known for exxagerating in the language too. Not denying that the moment is homophobic, but with the way chinese works, its really unlikely that the characters are homophobic. Distasteful sure, but no one should let it ruin there day or such a nice story~ a couple fictional sentences is not worth it~
I’ve never understood the need to apply personal pragmatic philosophy’s to fantasy works as a whole. It’s a practice in futility at best. Xanxian stories as a genre are ripe with contradictions, moral ambiguities, sexist overtones, rich over poor, human atrocities, animal cruelty and I could go on. As readers we obviously share a attraction for these stories nonetheless. It’s our escapism. The only true logic is to respect the writers work for what it is no more no less while leaving our normal moral views at the proverbial door.

He doesn’t want to put rings for 2 reasons. 1) if he waits until he has the spirit power of a title douluo then he could potentially fill the clear sky hammer with nothing but 100,000+ year spirits for all 9 spirit rings…meaning his ridiculous spirit will have ridiculous abilities at each level. Until he becomes powerful enough to absorb spirit rings of that level he will essentially waste the gift of twin spirits which is the fact that he can keep advancing in spirit power without having to get a ring at each rank and thus can wait for the most ideal arrangement for his second spirit.
2) He is also waiting to maximize his physique in order to deal with the strain so much spirit power will give him by possessing more than 9 spirit rings. As of now he likely has the physique but might still need to advance further in spirit level to be able to withstand it.
I think all 100K spirit rings is a bit unrealistic. Now multiple sure but all… I highly doubt. I say that for multiple reasons. 1) it would essentially killing something that is at the same level as Wu and his mother. Unless they were just extremely unreasonable with him I don’t think he would want to kill them. Remember he doesn’t have a problem killing, but he still doesn’t like doing it. 2) they are simply too hard to find and a title douluo by themselves are not strong enough to kill them by themselves. 3) that would simply be too much power no matter how strong his foundation is. I do however have a prediction for you. He will have at least 3 100K rings on his hammer. I say this because he still needs 3 spirit bones to make a full set. Torso, left leg, and left arm. I include torso because the armor isn’t a torso spirit bone but an evolution of his lances. That would mean all of his spirit bones with the exception of head will be 100K year bones. Truly OP.
what about the method of getting a ring without killing that all spiritbeasts use didn’t it base the size of the ring on how much the cultivator can handle
So If I am reading between the lines correctly, the second spirit ability of his mother’s bone is immortality? If I remember correctly, his mother was immortal and could only die by her own hand, correct?
I doubt it is direct immortality as it is only 1 spirit bone it seems more like wolverine’s healing factor and probably consumes a small amount of spirit power to activate. Still between that the abilities from Xiao Wu’s spirit bone and his mother’s who besides a title’d douluo can even hurt him any more

You do realize that no matter how op he is they are at war and he is still sixty sixth ranked thus seventy and above he will have a hard time against. In my opinion his power is the least the writer could do so that he isn’t scrubbed immediately when fighting against spirit hall.
Yeah but how much more interesting if the Shrek 7 devil were the one taking down Spirit Hall, with a army equipped with Hidden Weapon behind them. Bibi Dong vs 7 Devils… with EQUAL blessing for each of them. Not a “God” and his 6 strong disciples but who cant compare to him at all.
The best part including Tang San for me was when he absorbed the Man Faced Demon Spider ring and the fight between the Golden Generation of Spirit Hall. He really had to fight with everything he had, proved wits and skills, willpower, etc BUT wasn’t abusively OP yet.
So Bu Le’s spirit is a bra? I thought that was what it was the first time I read, but then I convinced myself otherwise… or am I wrong ? Bu Le’s spirit IS a bra, right? Somehow, I feel that this piece of information is very important to me….
I remember that it was previously mentioned that he was a control system spirit master, but if his spirit is essentially a bra, then I think he should be a support system spirit master xD

I think Tang San isnt conventional so my thinking is hes gonna take a short cut like he always has

That only applies to Fatty and isn’t really an excuse since he was a disgusting looking pedophile in Fatty’s previous interactions with him. Tang San and Tian Ya only witness the propositioning and they are both sickened.
It may not only be homophobia, but homophobia is clearly a significant component of it.
Anyway, I will be hoping for some better chapters in the future.

Excellently crafted comment. From what I understand, your reasoning is built on 2 assumptions. First, feeling a repulsion toward the “non-attractive” sex is a case of homophobia. Second, the hierarchy of disgust suggests homophobia as characters are more disgusted when Bu Le is making advances to an adult male than when making pedophilic advances to a 13 years old female. You expressed your point of view, and you supported it with two arguments, instead of blaming everyone and cursing everyone who opposes your point of view. That, I respect.
But I will respectfully disagree with you, but you are more than welcomed to challenge my point of view. I love it when new data changes my opinion.

Many factors come in play, mainly age, attractiveness, and intent. My reasoning is as follows: many straight males also feel repulsion toward the “attractive” sex (let’s use your definition of attractive sex), depending on the other party’s attractiveness and intent. Here’s an example, a straight man would probably feel repulsion if a disgusting-looking woman, twice his age, eyeballs his crotch. At least I would shiver. The reason why I challenged your first assumption is because a repulsion is not automatically a case of homophobia, other factors need to be considered: is that person decent/good looking or disgusting looking (attractiveness)? Does that person want to compliment me on my hat/beard/shirt or is that person eyeballing my crotch and want to have sex with me (intent)? Now moving back to the story, I believe that the characters are disgusted by the important factors in play, and not by the fact that Bu Le is homosexual. I can’t of course, not exclude a total possibility of homophobia, but I invite you to consider all relevant factors first, before making a call for homophobia.
For your second argument, I assume that you are unfamiliar with ancient Asian cultures (Chinese, Japanese, Indian). In ancient times, it was common practice were girls to be bethroned as infants and then married off as brides as early as 12-14 years of age. I believe even in some part of India nowadays, this practice hasn’t fully gone away. It is absolutely normal for readers to view this story with the lenses of the current society where this pedophilic practice is a sin of sins. But I would encourage readers to view it with the lenses of the ancient Chinese society — era that this story takes place. After all, you can’t expect Tan San to bring out a cellphone in the story, nor should you expect the characters to be repulsed by an adult making advances to a 13 years old girl. I am not a historian myself, nor do I major in Ancient Chinese History, but I believe the proper reaction would be for the characters to view the actions of Bu Le making advances to the 13 years old Xiao Wu as sexual harassment instead of pedophilic advances.
The two arguments you have provided do not automatically point to a case of homophobia. I am not saying that this is not a case of homophobia; all I’m saying is that it is extremely important to consider the context first and examine all relevant factors, instead of letting our emotions take the better of ourselves.

I agree with both of you pointing things out with conversation and not with cursing and being offended with no basis, however I believe that homophobia is the act of complete nontolerance to someone that is attracted to the same sex, and the part that makes it awfull is first not respecting the freedom of sexuality in all individuals trying to force your views on other people is wrong, be it sexual, political religious etc. and second the actions people take agaisn’t those they do not tolerate. But declaring people as homophobes just because they do not find someone from the not attractive sex for them attractive at all and even repulsive even if they do not actually mind it at all if 2 of his not attractive sex are a couple etc then you are just trying to force your own sexual views on others and it would be the same as people trying to change homosexuals cause they are wrong, or sick or whatever other derogatory term you can use

What bothers me about this scene is not so much that Fatty is being grossed out (which I can understand, since Bu Le is being described as a fairly repulsive person in and of itself), but that every single person present, including Bu Le’s friend was grossed out. Which can only be explained as a homophobic reation, since I doubt that Bu Le’s friends think that he is a repulsive person.
I also agree with dans that I personally think it’s sick that nobody was grossed out by him being a pedophile but everybody is grossed out when he pretends to be gay.

In ancient China (or even Japan), pedophilia as we know today does not exist. It was common practice for girls to be bethroned as infants and then be married out as brides by the age of 12-14 years old, sometimes to widows in the 30s-40s years of age.
In the current society, it would be sickening. But at the time, the life expectancy was much shorter. If a girl gets married by 18, you would lose 5 precious years, which translates into 2-3 potential pregnancies. This is why I believe none of the characters reacted violently to the pedophilic actions of Bu Lu. They reacted to that scenario the same degree as to how the current society would react to a case of sexual harassment.
Note: I find it truly unfortunate how people view sexual harassment in the current society. It is present everywhere, yet most people are desensitized, especially in investment banking offices and university campuses. But if you find out there’s a pedophile in your neighbourhood, the reaction is 1000x different… I find this sad.

Your argument has a point, however, I do disagree with it. My reason being that, although the setting may be based on ancient China, there are several elements that differ heavily from it, especially in relation to the status of women.
Women in this story can (and frequently do) become warriors and leaders, which, to my knowledge was definitely not the case in ancient China (I do bot believe that a woman could have held a position similar to Bibi Dong’s in ancient China).
Also, while sexual relations at an early age seem to be quite frequent, women seem to have the possibility of choosing their own partner, also (from what has been shown in the story so far) it does not seem to me that child marriage (or what we would consider as such in modern society) is common in the society shown in Douluo Dalu.
If this point differs this vastly from ancient China, then I don’t believe that the fact that marrying young girls (children) in China was common, while homosexuality wasn’t can serve as a reason for the homophobic behaviour that was displayed in this situation (by every single person present – if it had been just Fatty, I would have had no objection).

I think it just comes down to it being a gag joke, i’ve yet to see a gag that should be taken as a serious part of the plot, and most of them are based on offensive things like this. Chinese is known for exxagerating in the language too. Not denying that the moment is homophobic, but with the way chinese works, its really unlikely that the characters are homophobic. Distasteful sure, but no one should let it ruin there day or such a nice story~ a couple fictional sentences is not worth it~

I’ve never understood the need to apply personal pragmatic philosophy’s to fantasy works as a whole. It’s a practice in futility at best. Xanxian stories as a genre are ripe with contradictions, moral ambiguities, sexist overtones, rich over poor, human atrocities, animal cruelty and I could go on. As readers we obviously share a attraction for these stories nonetheless. It’s our escapism. The only true logic is to respect the writers work for what it is no more no less while leaving our normal moral views at the proverbial door.

He doesn’t want to put rings for 2 reasons. 1) if he waits until he has the spirit power of a title douluo then he could potentially fill the clear sky hammer with nothing but 100,000+ year spirits for all 9 spirit rings…meaning his ridiculous spirit will have ridiculous abilities at each level. Until he becomes powerful enough to absorb spirit rings of that level he will essentially waste the gift of twin spirits which is the fact that he can keep advancing in spirit power without having to get a ring at each rank and thus can wait for the most ideal arrangement for his second spirit.
2) He is also waiting to maximize his physique in order to deal with the strain so much spirit power will give him by possessing more than 9 spirit rings. As of now he likely has the physique but might still need to advance further in spirit level to be able to withstand it.

I think all 100K spirit rings is a bit unrealistic. Now multiple sure but all… I highly doubt. I say that for multiple reasons. 1) it would essentially killing something that is at the same level as Wu and his mother. Unless they were just extremely unreasonable with him I don’t think he would want to kill them. Remember he doesn’t have a problem killing, but he still doesn’t like doing it. 2) they are simply too hard to find and a title douluo by themselves are not strong enough to kill them by themselves. 3) that would simply be too much power no matter how strong his foundation is. I do however have a prediction for you. He will have at least 3 100K rings on his hammer. I say this because he still needs 3 spirit bones to make a full set. Torso, left leg, and left arm. I include torso because the armor isn’t a torso spirit bone but an evolution of his lances. That would mean all of his spirit bones with the exception of head will be 100K year bones. Truly OP.

I doubt it is direct immortality as it is only 1 spirit bone it seems more like wolverine’s healing factor and probably consumes a small amount of spirit power to activate. Still between that the abilities from Xiao Wu’s spirit bone and his mother’s who besides a title’d douluo can even hurt him any more

You do realize that no matter how op he is they are at war and he is still sixty sixth ranked thus seventy and above he will have a hard time against. In my opinion his power is the least the writer could do so that he isn’t scrubbed immediately when fighting against spirit hall.

Yeah but how much more interesting if the Shrek 7 devil were the one taking down Spirit Hall, with a army equipped with Hidden Weapon behind them. Bibi Dong vs 7 Devils… with EQUAL blessing for each of them. Not a “God” and his 6 strong disciples but who cant compare to him at all.
The best part including Tang San for me was when he absorbed the Man Faced Demon Spider ring and the fight between the Golden Generation of Spirit Hall. He really had to fight with everything he had, proved wits and skills, willpower, etc BUT wasn’t abusively OP yet.
