I don’t like being the bearer of bad news and I absolutely appreciate the translating but I gotta say this needs a bit of proofreading, a lot of the wording just didn’t go together that well. In the end it was understandable but only after rereading bits and pieces a few times.
Yeah, I could immediately tell that this was fairly badly done. The changes in tense the use of unnecessary words and even missing words at some point REALLY detracted from the reading experience. It almost felt like I was reading an mtl. Honestly, it was a lot less fun reading than usual. I’m still thankful for the chapter, after all owl probably put a lot of time and effort in, but a proofreader would’ve helped a lot.
That was beyond proofreading, the problem with proofreading is that the translation has to be reasonably accurate to begin with and that felt like MTL tier stuff. Bad translation + proofreading = fanfiction, you can’t really mend a bad translation that way or you’re just inventing new dialogue.
I feel bad saying it since I really do appreciate the translation (it is a lot of work translating stuff as you know) – but this time the translation quality wasn’t as good as we are used to it from bagelson. Of course expecting the same quality is a bit too much (yes, bagelson is that good ^^) unfortunately it felt a bit like MTL. Proofreading might not make the translation more accurate but it would still improve the reading flow.
Basically MTL is when someone translates by copy pasting sentences of the original novel into Google Translate then takes whatever is spit out and puts it in a word document. Google Translate is a helpful machine, but sadly it has its limits and sometimes it is almost impossible to tell what the original meaning is from what it gives you back. To be sure your getting the right thing it usually requires at least understanding some of the Original Novel’s language or as Kczz15 mentioned you end up having to fill in blanks and it can drastically change the story.
Ich have to correct you, MTL actually means Machine Translation. Google Translate is Machine Translation, but there are other programms, which (especially if they are professional programms) tend to be more accurate.

You know, it really bothers me how many people complain about this chapter. Yes, there are more errors than usual, but in my opinion it is still easily readable and if you go to the first few chapters of this novel, the quality isn’t any better.
Seriously, that is much better than most translations by beginners I have seen and I really don’t understand why so many people are complaining.

The way I see it is if you are tired of waiting for chapters or think the translation sucks, go somewhere else or learn the language yourself. Instead of being grateful all you are doing is complaining. Just be happy you get to read it at all… because the alternative is for you to not read it or depend on Google and guess at the story.
I can’t disagree with your logic but you should also consider that even Bagelson had to start somewhere and he turned out to be beyond awesome because he had passion and support from the community and look at us now… we’re so spoiled by Bagelson that quite a few amongst us can’t even handle another (sorry if i’m over assuming here guys ^^) beginning translator gives it a go. I for one feel like we should encourage his initiative because what happens when Bagelson quits, turns sick or just feels like taking a pretty long hiatus? sure we could hope for experienced translators picking up the serie, it is after all immensely popular, but if beginners don’t get the opportunity to get some much needed experience then this community will die out and where will be getting our (FREE!!!) fix then? criticism is a valuable and much needed part of a learning process but never let it go to far cuz they are doing us a favor by doing all this work and we should support not only the writers of these awesome stories that give color to an otherwise dul day but also to everyone else that works on these projects. that’s what it means to be part of a community… ^^
It was pretty rough :(. I mean, I’m happy about the translation, but I should have waited until tomorrow to read this lol. I was too tired to understand half of what I was reading.

No it really was fractured or at least poor, facts are facts and simply stating the truth is not insulting or trash talking somebody. The translation was poor quality at best and there were many moments, especially in the latter half of the chapter that were near impossible to understand because of the way they were translated.
If you think that people are not allowed to comment on the quality of a translation just because it’s free, then you need to get over yourself.
Perhaps you should mind your own words and get over yourself. This translation took time and effort. So it isn’t the same quality that you are used to. I agree I prefer quality over quantity myself, with that said Owl404’s effort should be appreciated and encouraged. With time they can improve, but you know it’s hard to want to make an effort when what you get for it is a slap in the face. What gives you the right to lord over the internet ? Nothing. Your ego has clearly gotten the best of you. Commenting and speaking ‘truth’ are fine. But being an ass about it is not required for someone doing a kindness for a community that should show more respect and consideration.
It takes time and a genuine want to share a story with others to sit down and translate this. As you stated it’s free, there is no charge to you whatsoever. The same is not true for the translators, they are investing their time. Criticism should be accepted and welcome. However it should be constructive and thoughtful. There is no need to for derision at all.
I’m not deriding Owl404, I just think he shouldn’t present this as a finished product, in a place where it is extremely unlikely to ever be replaced by a completed version. If he wants to practice his translation skills then I’d recommend that he do it on a separate blog, I encourage him to to continue but only after spending an hour or four studying with a Japanese grammar textbook first.

Ummm you do know that Duoluo Dalu is a chinese LN. So nothing would be gained looking at Japanese grammar book. Also you don’t even know what ethnicity Owl404 is…don’t just assume things. The chapter could use an editor tho, so if you feel up to it maybe you can help edit this chapter so it will be complete. I’m a proofreader but the problem is that this is completely beyond my help and it wouldn’t work here, editing can only really help if the basic translation itself is correct but there are a few problems with the grammatical structuring or a word is used incorrectly here or there. When the basic translation itself is incorrect however then ‘fixing’ the structuring and grammar leaves you with a work of fanfiction, wherein what’s said makes sense in English but it is not actually what happened in the original text.
Really the entire thing needs to be translation checked from line 1 with a translator sitting down with the translation and the original work side by side, double checking every line, making sure all the lines are accurate and fixing the ones that are not; it’s a job that would most likely take somebody as long as it would take them to simply re-translate the chapter themselves from scratch if not longer.
Things are lost in translation even when the quality of translation is good. It is impossible to completely relay everything from language to language and much less so when the translation is of a poor quality. It’s still much better than MTL though.
I definitely wasn’t disagreeing with you though, blindly white-knighting doesn’t really add anything and saying “learn Chinese” isn’t a feasible argument. “Let me learn every fucking language in the world just so I can read interesting fiction” is definitely not something normal people can do. Releasing something that is as poorly translated as this is a disgrace to the original writer more than anything. If I was Tang Jia San Shou, I wouldn’t be very happy with this.
I will say though; I’ve certainly seen much worse than this before. However, trying to reach that fight scene left me with a resounding “Huh?” in my mind.

Let me give you a random example of a sentence I just thought up and examples of how it would look translated, in the hopes you can understand what I mean:
Original sentence:
Boy talking to a girl: “I desire some honey, it’s lovely.”
A good translator might translate the sentence to English as such:
“I like honey, the sweet taste is enjoyable.”
The meaning of the sentence is kept intact, any errors can be fixed and everyone wins.
A poor translator might translate it more along the lines of this however:
“I desire you my honey, you’re lovely!”
Suddenly the meaning of the sentence is changed entirely, because the translator is taking key words and stringing them together into a sentence without taking proper look at the tense or anything else. Proofreading a translation requires a minimum level of accuracy in the original translation of the chapter for it to be effective, otherwise you are only covering up errors instead of fixing them. This chapter has a long way to go before it is at the point where it can be proofread, it would need to be translation checked from line 1 for a start.

First off, “fractured English” is pretty obvious hyperbole that the English language really doesn’t need any more of. Second, if it bothers you so much, proofread it yourself. I would gladly take multiple lesser quality releases a week as opposed to one better (but still rarely perfect) translation.
And how well do you understand the English vocabulary?? I’ve noticed that only people learning English, or have a primary language they speak that’s not English, are the only ones who have no problem reading this.
There are errors everywhere… words have different meanings, and then the singular or plural form of words that he uses fucks the entire paragraph up. I cant understand half the shit going on when there are no punctuation marks until the end of the paragraph.

I know it’s a different person, but when it comes to editing and grammar, you really shouldn’t be able to notice :S I considered leaving the chapter for later to see if the quality improved and made it more understandable for reading 2 back to back.

The thing is that it’s now “negligible”. There are missing words, messed up syntax, random changes in tense, and overall felt similar to reading mtl. This chapter could be improved so much with just getting a proof reader to correct it. As is, the grammar heavily detracts from the story, making it hard to understand what’s actually happenening for at least a third of the chapter.
No, there doesn’t seem to be something like “immunity” in this series. It’s just highly resistant to both heat and cold. In other words, the black flames just exceeded the blue silver emperor’s resistance. That being said, the amount of resistance *should* be bordering on immunity, considering how he can enter the Yin-Yang Well, which means that that fire should be ludicrously hot.
To my understanding of the raws, it would seem that rather than being burned away, it was more off being blown away by the explosive force of the spear thrusts which were explosive cause of the “fire”. After all the grass is immune to fire but not shockwave attacks.

I don’t speak chineese, but still am multilanguage speaker, so I know that some different, but relative words in one lang can be the same word in another. so here, I guess word ”sense” was mistranslated as “smell”, that in chineese are the same word…
To my understanding of chinese, the smell in the phrase used is something like a Chinese phrase where they use 味 to describe something feeling like another equivalent. So it would mean that the ‘feel’ of the spear thrust reminded tang San of the ferocious attack of the sword douluo.
What a nice substitute of defence with attack, Tang San didn’t shun this time, he wanted to have a try and know, how strong was Yang Wudi’s attack at earth.

The “at earth” I believe is a mistranslation of dao di which is phonetically similar to ‘just how much” in chinese

I don’t understand why people complain that quality should be more prioritized than quantity, especially now that the holidays are here and that people should enjoy them (translating is a very tiring thing to do).

I appreciate the help on Bagelsons project , but to go from such a high quality to this where I can find multiple mistakes per paragraph. Plus the flow is completely different from any of the old chapters. That is expected with different translators but this isn’t just flowing differently. This is marginally better than MTL. This needs some heavy editing with a lot of translation checking. After 177 chapters you get used to the way the story is written and this went on a very far tangent than what is normal.
I don’t think we should rush quantity for such a big sacrifice in quality. Especially on Douluo Dalu which has such a good quality translation. I felt like I was reading a different book this chapter.
Sorry to be harsh but it needs to be stepped up. To have good quality releases mixed with bad would be a detriment to the second half of this Web novel.

I honestly had no problem reading this translation and am thankful for it. When I read my mind just autocorrects most grammar mistakes for me. If i see ture and it’s meant to be true and I read it in the context that it’s in, I will read ‘true’ and honestly not see the mistake until it’s pointed out lol. That said I may have also seen an edited version because some have commented about untranslated bits.

Different anon here, but Chinese has different grammar rules than English. There are errors in the tl, but a lot of the “unreadable” parts are actually a direct translation without romanticizing the content so that it makes more sense to English ears. Lots of first time translators make this mistake, since they aren’t yet comfortable with rewording the authors text.
Your ignorance toward translations in general is showing, if this chapter really was so hard to get through. No better than someone who won’t watch movies with subtitles. It’s a small annoyance to share in a great story.
I’m well aware that Chinese and English are completely different. I’m not ignorant. What pisses me off is that some of the translators don’t fully understand either language, and decide to post mediocre chapters.

Was the chapter edited? I read it at 4PM PST, and could only somewhat notice grammatical mistakes. I’m reading through the comments amazed at how douchey and over privileged the comments sound.

Godsu – As much as I appreciate the effort of free translation, you’re being incredibly stupid and sycophantic. Not only are you indiscriminate about insulting everyone that decided to stay silent on the matter regardless of their personal opinion, but you are also wrong.
Is a translator exempt from criticism just because he works for free? Absolutely not. I don’t think it is wrong to wish for a quality translation worthy of the original work, and in fact I think it is exceedingly fair to point out the shortcomings in someone’s work. That doesn’t mean owl should stop translating, but I do wish he will learn to look at what he pens down more critically in the future.
Most importantly, I hope that once he has improved significantly, chapters like this one will be edited to meet the quality standard established by Bagelson.
I don’t think “Wow you destroyed this chapter I can’t enjoy it now because the translation is so bad” Is criticism but that’s just me if you think you deserve high quality work just because you generate traffic on this site than that’s cool.
On the other hand I have seen some critical comments and if Owl404 wants to take them to heart and improve that’s cool if he doesn’t and wants to keep doing us the favor of translating these chapters with “low quality” that’s cool too I can take some time off my super busy life to re-read and comprehend the parts that I don’t get on the first run, you know basic elementary school stuff.

Arkan – Never in my entire post did I say I was not appreciative of Owl’s efforts. Some people just lose their heads when they see any sort of criticism. It’s not even aimed at you, and still you are getting up in arms about it. I am more bothered by the fact that a lot of people seem to be ingratiating themselves with the translators by preemptively insulting half their goddamned readerbase than I am by the fact that this translation is of somewhat lesser quality than Bagelson’s work.
Plus, it’s natural for people to want ‘more’. People strive for quality in everything they do. It’s not just readers that want more. A translator wouldn’t purposely submit a translation of subpar quality. Whatever it is you do, you’ll wanna do a bit better than you did the last time, right? So acting like some blogpost SJW and condemning everyone whose opinion isn’t purely positive does not help anyone, least of all the translator himself.

OK, haku, et. al., here’s my thing: if you were “doing just fine” in the sack, would you want the person you’re “just fine” with to tell you that you could be doing better? Or would you rather stick with being less than your best without realizing it? Some people will answer that they want to be “great” or “awesome” or “mind-blowing”, and others are fine with “fine”.
I doubt seriously that owl404 thought his first foray was going to be perfect. And yeah, no one directly asked him if he was open to criticism before offering it, but I also think there’s an informal process he agreed to by posting–on what is basically bagelson’s baby–to a readerbase that has expectations. It’s therefore his choice, hence responsibility, to take it or not.
Most (read: “majority”) of the criticisms I’ve read have been critical, objective; and most (read: “nearly all”) of the responses to criticisms have paraphrased the o.p. with harsher wording and are basically trolling, which makes you feel like a hero, but is probably making owl404 feel worse (armed with that perspective, who’re the real dickheads?). It also begs the question to everyone who is remorselessly attacking the critiquers based on–what I estimate to be–poor comprehension of their posts: how well adjusted is your perspective on what constitutes good storytelling vs. “fine” if you repeatedly confuse criticisms with attacks?
In summary, everyone: post your appreciation (again, good effort, owl404); post your concerns (there are things you can improve on, owl404); and stop acting like babies that think criticism is the same as hate and that everyone gets a gold star. Please.
Don’t misinterpret our appreciation to the translator as something as holding him back. Being appreciative of someone else’s ‘Free’ work encourage the translator to do better. Isn’t it the same with Bagelson when he was just starting?

I feel that Paragon Golden Body is better than Notthingness.
If he use Nothingness he probably can avoid the lance but not the black flame while PGB can block them all.
And he can attack back during PGB but I doubt he could during Nothingness.
Not to mention that Nothingness cost his gf’s soul made him ban it usage at all.
Unfortunately, Owl404’s translation makes me want to compare it to a very good machine translation. I say this because the grammar was off (i can’t really describe it better unfortunately), some sentences made no sense whatsoever, and some of the verb choices were questionable (How do you weave a hammer?). Together, these shortcomings severely detracted from the reading experience.
Not being a native speaker/reader of Mandarin, I can’t provide specific advice without being radically off from the original text. Though I would definitely encourage Owl404 to work with someone during the editing process to speed up his learning process and smooth out some of these kinks.

Not to argue, but absolutely not true. e.g. A three-year-old child in an English speaking country is going to speak broken English; a 15-year old adolescent that is raised in an uneducated neighborhood has a good chance of speaking broken English; a cowboy living 29 of every 30 days completely alone will, in time, speak broken English. I don’t speak a word of chinese but I am trilingual and I understand perfectly when you used smell instead of sense and retarded instead of delayed. Smell and sense are the same words in many languages and a retardant delays a chemical reaction (also, tardy is being late and a retard is someone slow in their mind, it is easy to deduce), the root verb “retarder” is actually slowed in French (latin: retardare) so anyone who tries would understand especially given the context. Your english is already very good and these last steps to make it perfect are actually extremely hard, especially if you are fluent in multiple other language. Some other errors, you just need to improve on proof-reading yourself which is also very hard.
Posting these translations and welcoming the criticism will greatly help you in perfecting your translation skills, nothing like experience. So see everything here as a positive to better yourself regardless of the tone; don’t mind those who complain of making a tiny extra effort to read, it is insignificant compared to the work you are putting into it and what you are offering us. We are already getting these translation for free, I think it is a fair exchange to make a little effort on our part to read harder and give you criticism in exchange so you get something in return 🙂

This would be translated in prior chapters as “Ugly face”, every battle people are making ugly faces which doesn’t make much sense in English and even kind of funny when you picture someone grimacing; serious, amazed, astounded, startled, surprised, perplexed, terrified, horrified, painful expression… would be more appropriate, but not ugly 🙂

If you need proofread software or machine, I can suggest you to try “grammarly(dot)com”. However, this is the online subscrption that you have to pay $11.99 per month. I don’t advise to take this unless you don’t mind to spend some money on something else. Just give you this idea if you wish to look for it.
You want to better yourself, not be dependent on a machine. In addition, while grammatically correct, these software rarely provide fluide sentences. My advise is that after your have finished translating a chapter, delay the posting one day, sleep on it and go over it the next date. You will find a lot of mistakes then. And very importantly, go back to the old chapters to review them, find some errors and correct the,. I am a programmer, I often go though existing functioning code I wrote and look for ways to make it better, and I always can. This exercise of improving past work helps me a lot in writing better code for future projects.
I agree this is fairly well done its better than the ones I did on Konjiki no Wordmaster and I was teaching myself and it took me over a week to get something close to the same quality.

I have tried google translate, and this is way better than that. For anyone who is not pleased, feel free to translate it yourself. Reading chinese is very hard and the diction used in DD makes it even harder.
Thanks for the chapter Owl. I appreciate your effort, though I must say that indeed, as many have already pointed out, the translation is not as fluid as Bagelson’s ones.
It would be great if Bagelson could go over this translation and fix only the not-so-fluid or hard to understand parts like the following one;
(Strong force brought horrific long lance, directly jacked up the spiderweb launched later, then pierced it, whose spearhead had already pointed to Tang San’s face). I’m taking this just as example.
Proofreading and reviewing would be useful in any other chapters you want to translate, at least until the quality matches Bagel’s standards, especially if you are willing to keep doing this, which we would greatly appreciate nonetheless.
I re-read all the chapters recently and I know it takes time to get better, Bagelson’s own translations were not as good as now at first, but to avoid lowering the quality of the work being done mostly by Bagelson I again advise some editing on this chapter.

I don’t like being the bearer of bad news and I absolutely appreciate the translating but I gotta say this needs a bit of proofreading, a lot of the wording just didn’t go together that well. In the end it was understandable but only after rereading bits and pieces a few times.

Yeah, I could immediately tell that this was fairly badly done. The changes in tense the use of unnecessary words and even missing words at some point REALLY detracted from the reading experience. It almost felt like I was reading an mtl. Honestly, it was a lot less fun reading than usual. I’m still thankful for the chapter, after all owl probably put a lot of time and effort in, but a proofreader would’ve helped a lot.

That was beyond proofreading, the problem with proofreading is that the translation has to be reasonably accurate to begin with and that felt like MTL tier stuff. Bad translation + proofreading = fanfiction, you can’t really mend a bad translation that way or you’re just inventing new dialogue.

I feel bad saying it since I really do appreciate the translation (it is a lot of work translating stuff as you know) – but this time the translation quality wasn’t as good as we are used to it from bagelson. Of course expecting the same quality is a bit too much (yes, bagelson is that good ^^) unfortunately it felt a bit like MTL. Proofreading might not make the translation more accurate but it would still improve the reading flow.

Basically MTL is when someone translates by copy pasting sentences of the original novel into Google Translate then takes whatever is spit out and puts it in a word document. Google Translate is a helpful machine, but sadly it has its limits and sometimes it is almost impossible to tell what the original meaning is from what it gives you back. To be sure your getting the right thing it usually requires at least understanding some of the Original Novel’s language or as Kczz15 mentioned you end up having to fill in blanks and it can drastically change the story.

Ich have to correct you, MTL actually means Machine Translation. Google Translate is Machine Translation, but there are other programms, which (especially if they are professional programms) tend to be more accurate.

You know, it really bothers me how many people complain about this chapter. Yes, there are more errors than usual, but in my opinion it is still easily readable and if you go to the first few chapters of this novel, the quality isn’t any better.

The way I see it is if you are tired of waiting for chapters or think the translation sucks, go somewhere else or learn the language yourself. Instead of being grateful all you are doing is complaining. Just be happy you get to read it at all… because the alternative is for you to not read it or depend on Google and guess at the story.

I can’t disagree with your logic but you should also consider that even Bagelson had to start somewhere and he turned out to be beyond awesome because he had passion and support from the community and look at us now… we’re so spoiled by Bagelson that quite a few amongst us can’t even handle another (sorry if i’m over assuming here guys ^^) beginning translator gives it a go. I for one feel like we should encourage his initiative because what happens when Bagelson quits, turns sick or just feels like taking a pretty long hiatus? sure we could hope for experienced translators picking up the serie, it is after all immensely popular, but if beginners don’t get the opportunity to get some much needed experience then this community will die out and where will be getting our (FREE!!!) fix then? criticism is a valuable and much needed part of a learning process but never let it go to far cuz they are doing us a favor by doing all this work and we should support not only the writers of these awesome stories that give color to an otherwise dul day but also to everyone else that works on these projects. that’s what it means to be part of a community… ^^

No it really was fractured or at least poor, facts are facts and simply stating the truth is not insulting or trash talking somebody. The translation was poor quality at best and there were many moments, especially in the latter half of the chapter that were near impossible to understand because of the way they were translated.
If you think that people are not allowed to comment on the quality of a translation just because it’s free, then you need to get over yourself.

Perhaps you should mind your own words and get over yourself. This translation took time and effort. So it isn’t the same quality that you are used to. I agree I prefer quality over quantity myself, with that said Owl404’s effort should be appreciated and encouraged. With time they can improve, but you know it’s hard to want to make an effort when what you get for it is a slap in the face. What gives you the right to lord over the internet ? Nothing. Your ego has clearly gotten the best of you. Commenting and speaking ‘truth’ are fine. But being an ass about it is not required for someone doing a kindness for a community that should show more respect and consideration.
It takes time and a genuine want to share a story with others to sit down and translate this. As you stated it’s free, there is no charge to you whatsoever. The same is not true for the translators, they are investing their time. Criticism should be accepted and welcome. However it should be constructive and thoughtful. There is no need to for derision at all.

I’m not deriding Owl404, I just think he shouldn’t present this as a finished product, in a place where it is extremely unlikely to ever be replaced by a completed version. If he wants to practice his translation skills then I’d recommend that he do it on a separate blog, I encourage him to to continue but only after spending an hour or four studying with a Japanese grammar textbook first.
However, you using “volunteer work” as an excuse for non-translations is spitting on the face of the community, this isn’t the place to practice his translations which are not yet up to par and things that take time and effort are not good & praiseworthy by default.

Ummm you do know that Duoluo Dalu is a chinese LN. So nothing would be gained looking at Japanese grammar book. Also you don’t even know what ethnicity Owl404 is…don’t just assume things. The chapter could use an editor tho, so if you feel up to it maybe you can help edit this chapter so it will be complete. I know it’s Chinese, writing Japanese there was accidental. Only you mentioned his ethnicity, please don’t try to put words into my mouth.
I’m a proofreader but the problem is that this is completely beyond my help and it wouldn’t work here, editing can only really help if the basic translation itself is correct but there are a few problems with the grammatical structuring or a word is used incorrectly here or there. When the basic translation itself is incorrect however then ‘fixing’ the structuring and grammar leaves you with a work of fanfiction, wherein what’s said makes sense in English but it is not actually what happened in the original text.
Really the entire thing needs to be translation checked from line 1 with a translator sitting down with the translation and the original work side by side, double checking every line, making sure all the lines are accurate and fixing the ones that are not; it’s a job that would most likely take somebody as long as it would take them to simply re-translate the chapter themselves from scratch if not longer.

Things are lost in translation even when the quality of translation is good. It is impossible to completely relay everything from language to language and much less so when the translation is of a poor quality. It’s still much better than MTL though.

I definitely wasn’t disagreeing with you though, blindly white-knighting doesn’t really add anything and saying “learn Chinese” isn’t a feasible argument. “Let me learn every fucking language in the world just so I can read interesting fiction” is definitely not something normal people can do. Let me give you a random example of a sentence I just thought up and examples of how it would look translated, in the hopes you can understand what I mean:
Original sentence:
Boy talking to a girl: “I desire some honey, it’s lovely.”
A good translator might translate the sentence to English as such:
“I like honey, the sweet taste is enjoyable.”
The meaning of the sentence is kept intact, any errors can be fixed and everyone wins.
A poor translator might translate it more along the lines of this however:
“I desire you my honey, you’re lovely!”
Suddenly the meaning of the sentence is changed entirely, because the translator is taking key words and stringing them together into a sentence without taking proper look at the tense or anything else. Proofreading a translation requires a minimum level of accuracy in the original translation of the chapter for it to be effective, otherwise you are only covering up errors instead of fixing them. This chapter has a long way to go before it is at the point where it can be proofread, it would need to be translation checked from line 1 for a start.

There are errors everywhere… words have different meanings, and then the singular or plural form of words that he uses fucks the entire paragraph up. I cant understand half the shit going on when there are no punctuation marks until the end of the paragraph.

The thing is that it’s now “negligible”. There are missing words, messed up syntax, random changes in tense, and overall felt similar to reading mtl. This chapter could be improved so much with just getting a proof reader to correct it. As is, the grammar heavily detracts from the story, making it hard to understand what’s actually happenening for at least a third of the chapter.

No, there doesn’t seem to be something like “immunity” in this series. It’s just highly resistant to both heat and cold. In other words, the black flames just exceeded the blue silver emperor’s resistance. That being said, the amount of resistance *should* be bordering on immunity, considering how he can enter the Yin-Yang Well, which means that that fire should be ludicrously hot.

To my understanding of the raws, it would seem that rather than being burned away, it was more off being blown away by the explosive force of the spear thrusts which were explosive cause of the “fire”. After all the grass is immune to fire but not shockwave attacks.

I don’t speak chineese, but still am multilanguage speaker, so I know that some different, but relative words in one lang can be the same word in another. so here, I guess word ”sense” was mistranslated as “smell”, that in chineese are the same word…

To my understanding of chinese, the smell in the phrase used is something like a Chinese phrase where they use 味 to describe something feeling like another equivalent. So it would mean that the ‘feel’ of the spear thrust reminded tang San of the ferocious attack of the sword douluo.

I appreciate the help on Bagelsons project , but to go from such a high quality to this where I can find multiple mistakes per paragraph. Plus the flow is completely different from any of the old chapters. That is expected with different translators but this isn’t just flowing differently. This is marginally better than MTL. This needs some heavy editing with a lot of translation checking. After 177 chapters you get used to the way the story is written and this went on a very far tangent than what is normal.
I don’t think we should rush quantity for such a big sacrifice in quality. Especially on Douluo Dalu which has such a good quality translation. I felt like I was reading a different book this chapter.
Sorry to be harsh but it needs to be stepped up. To have good quality releases mixed with bad would be a detriment to the second half of this Web novel.

I do appreciate his(?) Time and effort, but considering how off the grammar is and how amazing the usual translation are it makes it hard to enjoy this. The translations was, as someone else in the comments said, only marginally better than MTL. It was almost a pain to read. And yes, I have read mtl before for a series, and will never be doing that again.

I honestly had no problem reading this translation and am thankful for it. When I read my mind just autocorrects most grammar mistakes for me. If i see ture and it’s meant to be true and I read it in the context that it’s in, I will read ‘true’ and honestly not see the mistake until it’s pointed out lol. That said I may have also seen an edited version because some have commented about untranslated bits.

Different anon here, but Chinese has different grammar rules than English. There are errors in the tl, but a lot of the “unreadable” parts are actually a direct translation without romanticizing the content so that it makes more sense to English ears. Lots of first time translators make this mistake, since they aren’t yet comfortable with rewording the authors text.
Your ignorance toward translations in general is showing, if this chapter really was so hard to get through. No better than someone who won’t watch movies with subtitles. It’s a small annoyance to share in a great story.

I’m well aware that Chinese and English are completely different. I’m not ignorant. What pisses me off is that some of the translators don’t fully understand either language, and decide to post mediocre chapters.
Without having someone who’s fluent in the language go through and edit it.
I don’t mean to sound like i’m directing this directly at Owl404 or other Translators on this site, you have to start somewhere. I know the previous statement is pretty harsh, and do not mean it towards anyone of the translators on this site.
It is mainly directed to the translators who require money to translate a “crappy” chapter.
Again i would like to apologize to the people and translators on this site. This rant was suppose to be for another light novel website, that requires a hefty sum of money for a single chapter.

Was the chapter edited? I read it at 4PM PST, and could only somewhat notice grammatical mistakes. I’m reading through the comments amazed at how douchey and over privileged the comments sound.

Does your English suck so bad that you can’t understand this translation?
Are you dickish enough that you complain about free content given to you by nice strangers that you wouldn’t otherwise enjoy?
Are you such a self entitled douche as to not waste 10 more minutes re-reading so you can grasp the chapter completely (that’s all it takes actually) and come here complaining and asking someone to “translate better” so your lazy ass doesn’t have to work even a little bit harder?
If the answer to any or all of these was ‘yes’ than congratulations you are officially a dickhead no better than other dickheads with dicks for heads or dicks on their heads who knows. cause’ cmon english is not my native language and I understood the chapter perfectly so that is not an excuse.

Godsu – As much as I appreciate the effort of free translation, you’re being incredibly stupid and sycophantic. Not only are you indiscriminate about insulting everyone that decided to stay silent on the matter regardless of their personal opinion, but you are also wrong.
Is a translator exempt from criticism just because he works for free? Absolutely not. I don’t think it is wrong to wish for a quality translation worthy of the original work, and in fact I think it is exceedingly fair to point out the shortcomings in someone’s work. That doesn’t mean owl should stop translating, but I do wish he will learn to look at what he pens down more critically in the future.
Most importantly, I hope that once he has improved significantly, chapters like this one will be edited to meet the quality standard established by Bagelson.

I don’t think “Wow you destroyed this chapter I can’t enjoy it now because the translation is so bad” Is criticism but that’s just me if you think you deserve high quality work just because you generate traffic on this site than that’s cool.
On the other hand I have seen some critical comments and if Owl404 wants to take them to heart and improve that’s cool if he doesn’t and wants to keep doing us the favor of translating these chapters with “low quality” that’s cool too I can take some time off my super busy life to re-read and comprehend the parts that I don’t get on the first run, you know basic elementary school stuff.

Put your money where you mouth and translate it yourself. Seriously read it in Chinese if you are that concerned about the original authors work that might require effort and learning right… easier to blame/flame someone when at the end of the day they are doing you a favour.
If you can’t read this or auto-correct it in your head then perhaps you need to learn since your are not owed anything and if Bagelson is happy to let Owl do the translation who are you?

Arkan – Never in my entire post did I say I was not appreciative of Owl’s efforts. Some people just lose their heads when they see any sort of criticism. It’s not even aimed at you, and still you are getting up in arms about it. I am more bothered by the fact that a lot of people seem to be ingratiating themselves with the translators by preemptively insulting half their goddamned readerbase than I am by the fact that this translation is of somewhat lesser quality than Bagelson’s work.
Plus, it’s natural for people to want ‘more’. People strive for quality in everything they do. It’s not just readers that want more. A translator wouldn’t purposely submit a translation of subpar quality. Whatever it is you do, you’ll wanna do a bit better than you did the last time, right? So acting like some blogpost SJW and condemning everyone whose opinion isn’t purely positive does not help anyone, least of all the translator himself.

First off, thank you for the effort, owl404.
OK, haku, et. al., here’s my thing: if you were “doing just fine” in the sack, would you want the person you’re “just fine” with to tell you that you could be doing better? Or would you rather stick with being less than your best without realizing it? Some people will answer that they want to be “great” or “awesome” or “mind-blowing”, and others are fine with “fine”.
I doubt seriously that owl404 thought his first foray was going to be perfect. And yeah, no one directly asked him if he was open to criticism before offering it, but I also think there’s an informal process he agreed to by posting–on what is basically bagelson’s baby–to a readerbase that has expectations. It’s therefore his choice, hence responsibility, to take it or not.
Most (read: “majority”) of the criticisms I’ve read have been critical, objective; and most (read: “nearly all”) of the responses to criticisms have paraphrased the o.p. with harsher wording and are basically trolling, which makes you feel like a hero, but is probably making owl404 feel worse (armed with that perspective, who’re the real dickheads?). It also begs the question to everyone who is remorselessly attacking the critiquers based on–what I estimate to be–poor comprehension of their posts: how well adjusted is your perspective on what constitutes good storytelling vs. “fine” if you repeatedly confuse criticisms with attacks?
In summary, everyone: post your appreciation (again, good effort, owl404); post your concerns (there are things you can improve on, owl404); and stop acting like babies that think criticism is the same as hate and that everyone gets a gold star. Please.
Oh, and the story is really heating up!

Don’t misinterpret our appreciation to the translator as something as holding him back. Being appreciative of someone else’s ‘Free’ work encourage the translator to do better. Isn’t it the same with Bagelson when he was just starting?
We are just saying to those thickheads to stop being privileged and spoiled to demand something perfect out of a volunteer and to take a look at themselves for being self-entitled.
If you noticed that we only chided those proud ungratefull ones (especially to kczz15 who said that Owl404 should make his own blog to dump his ‘trash’ work there but not here) not the one who were giving constructive critism. Now tell me, wont you also be tick off by what he said?

I feel that Paragon Golden Body is better than Notthingness.
If he use Nothingness he probably can avoid the lance but not the black flame while PGB can block them all.
And he can attack back during PGB but I doubt he could during Nothingness.
Not to mention that Nothingness cost his gf’s soul made him ban it usage at all.

Unfortunately, Owl404’s translation makes me want to compare it to a very good machine translation. I say this because the grammar was off (i can’t really describe it better unfortunately), some sentences made no sense whatsoever, and some of the verb choices were questionable (How do you weave a hammer?). Together, these shortcomings severely detracted from the reading experience.
Not being a native speaker/reader of Mandarin, I can’t provide specific advice without being radically off from the original text. Though I would definitely encourage Owl404 to work with someone during the editing process to speed up his learning process and smooth out some of these kinks.

Not to argue, but absolutely not true. e.g. A three-year-old child in an English speaking country is going to speak broken English; a 15-year old adolescent that is raised in an uneducated neighborhood has a good chance of speaking broken English; a cowboy living 29 of every 30 days completely alone will, in time, speak broken English. To turn phrases: practice makes perfect, and use it or lose it.

Thank you Owl404! Please keep translating and read the comments here as constructive criticism. Even if it wasn’t as smooth as usual, the extra effort to read is nothing compared to the effort you put in translating it.
But more important, the mistakes people post here will definitely help you improve a lot.
I don’t speak a word of chinese but I am trilingual and I understand perfectly when you used smell instead of sense and retarded instead of delayed. Smell and sense are the same words in many languages and a retardant delays a chemical reaction (also, tardy is being late and a retard is someone slow in their mind, it is easy to deduce), the root verb “retarder” is actually slowed in French (latin: retardare) so anyone who tries would understand especially given the context. Your english is already very good and these last steps to make it perfect are actually extremely hard, especially if you are fluent in multiple other language. Some other errors, you just need to improve on proof-reading yourself which is also very hard.
Posting these translations and welcoming the criticism will greatly help you in perfecting your translation skills, nothing like experience. So see everything here as a positive to better yourself regardless of the tone; don’t mind those who complain of making a tiny extra effort to read, it is insignificant compared to the work you are putting into it and what you are offering us. We are already getting these translation for free, I think it is a fair exchange to make a little effort on our part to read harder and give you criticism in exchange so you get something in return 🙂

Also, even though your translation is greatly inferior to the ones we are used to reading, you did a better job here: “Having found this, Tang San’s face turned extremely serious.” . This would be translated in prior chapters as “Ugly face”, every battle people are making ugly faces which doesn’t make much sense in English and even kind of funny when you picture someone grimacing; serious, amazed, astounded, startled, surprised, perplexed, terrified, horrified, painful expression… would be more appropriate, but not ugly 🙂

If you need proofread software or machine, I can suggest you to try “grammarly(dot)com”. However, this is the online subscrption that you have to pay $11.99 per month. I don’t advise to take this unless you don’t mind to spend some money on something else. Just give you this idea if you wish to look for it.

You want to better yourself, not be dependent on a machine. In addition, while grammatically correct, these software rarely provide fluide sentences. My advise is that after your have finished translating a chapter, delay the posting one day, sleep on it and go over it the next date. You will find a lot of mistakes then. And very importantly, go back to the old chapters to review them, find some errors and correct the,. I am a programmer, I often go though existing functioning code I wrote and look for ways to make it better, and I always can. This exercise of improving past work helps me a lot in writing better code for future projects.

So sorry for my poor English and lack of time. I thought bagel would revise my broken translation so I just uploaded it, but obviously he didn’t have that much time… Just let me know if you have any suggestion: owl404(at)126(dot)com, or any frequent error in my English and translation. I’ll correct them and make it better the next time.
If you really care the battle ruined by me between Tang San and Yang Wudi, maybe I’ll submit a revised version after my finals came to an end(about 1.24), with other ruined chapters. And I hope bagel would have time to proofread them then.
Lately my speed will be 1 chapter/week, so you will have about one from bagel and one from me per week, maybe other devotors so I’m not so sure. Anyway, DD is really a nice novel, hope you guys enjoy it.

So either I am a fuckin’ genius (what I doubt) or all these idiots complaining are just too stupid to think a little bit around the corner while reading.
As for your apology, dude, don’t worry about all that stuff, instead I feel like I should appologize instead for all the criticism (the unconstructive criticism)! Seriously, you put your personal time and work in it without getting anything for it, so if someone doesn’t like your translation, he can just not read it and wait for a better one, nobody forces anyone to read your chapters.

Thanks for the chapter Owl. I appreciate your effort, though I must say that indeed, as many have already pointed out, the translation is not as fluid as Bagelson’s ones.
It would be great if Bagelson could go over this translation and fix only the not-so-fluid or hard to understand parts like the following one;
(Strong force brought horrific long lance, directly jacked up the spiderweb launched later, then pierced it, whose spearhead had already pointed to Tang San’s face). I’m taking this just as example.
Proofreading and reviewing would be useful in any other chapters you want to translate, at least until the quality matches Bagel’s standards, especially if you are willing to keep doing this, which we would greatly appreciate nonetheless.
I re-read all the chapters recently and I know it takes time to get better, Bagelson’s own translations were not as good as now at first, but to avoid lowering the quality of the work being done mostly by Bagelson I again advise some editing on this chapter.
