  1. Why am I getting this foreboding feeling of Fatty going on some kind of diet and then ignoring Chengxiang?

Like that movie with Ryan Reynolds trying to get in Cameron Diaz’s pants for petty revenge from when he was a fat teenager.

  2. Thanks for the upload! I wonder, is the “thing” that said that sentence the “you know who” that starts with an A?

  3. Yuhuu, he is back in action! Thanks a lot for the chapter!

One question though, am I too stupid not to get the following part:

” ‘Only, wouldn’t this be the imperial family……’. Even though she didn’t continue, everyone still understood what she was implying.”

What was she implying? That the royal family wants to woo him or use an artifact to somehow control him? Make Tang San indebted to them (although he more or less “earned” this reward)? To me at least it isn’t 100% sure what she wanted to say. I would be happy for any helpful comments ^^

I think maybe after seeing the damage to Tang San, they thought maybe the imperial family wanted it to hurt him. And that’s why Mubai grabbed it and tested it himself. So if anyone was injured it would be him and not Tang.

      Liked by 2 people

      • I don’t believe that would be the case because Tang had already earned the respect of the (emperor/majesty/king?) long before he was bestowed the cosmic shroud. I wonder why no one has questioned that person that appeared after it injured tang slightly. hmmm

        Liked by 1 person

              • Well it might be an ancestor of the royal family (though in that case it wouldn’t make much sense that the royal family gave it willingly away since its worth would be way too high). But them thinking that the royal family would give Tang San an item that will harm him on purpose doesn’t really make too much sense for me – they wouldn’t gain anything from that and only summon the wrath of one of their strongest supporters.

So it is still a mystery on my end what she really implied (what we will never know with 100% certainty).

                Like

                • She does seem to be implying that the imperial family was attempting to hurt him, since afterwards it says Mubai grabbed it for fear it was dangerous. Although it would be stupid for the imperial family to do that, I think it’s normal to be suspicious in their world – especially after everything they’ve been through.

  5. Thanks for the Chapter! A few things that have got me on the edge of my seat:

Who is the faint figure that appeared after the cosmic shroud attacked Tang?
I wonder how much they will level up by the time they get to to the sea or if it will time skip 2 months to the island.
will fatty undergo a dramatic physique change, OR will an event happen that will result in fatty saving the girl and then she will start accepting him
How do the 2 attacks that Tang speaks about look like?
Is anyone foreshadowing that the first 2 abilities will be one of the key components to escaping or deferring fights once they arrive at the sea god island?
So much to think on but it’s going to be amazing

  6. So according to the comments doc, Bagekson and Owl404 are dropping translation. Whether it’s just temporary or not we don’t know yet. Piggybottle as far as I know is still doing it and has even checked out a chapter to translate this week. But we will be getting 1 chapter from now on until only Piggybottle is left. Then whether or not he wants to keeps going solo will decide if we go from 1 chapter to 0 or not.

Was fun Douluo Dalu, wish we could’ve seen just how strong the SSD got.

    • Uhm, another explanation is that Bagelson haven’t updated the spreadsheet. Since their spreadsheet says that 202 isn’t translated but clearly it is since we are commenting on it.

      Don’t jump to conclusions.

Also, thank you Bagelson for another great Chapter

      • Not jumping to conclusions dude. It’s been talked about by Owl404 and Bagelson in the new discussion system the gdocs people are using since gdocs sucks right now. It’s not an assumption. We’ve been told this man. Welcome to dumpsvile population you, me, and everyone who can’t read Chinese.

          • So according to Simon, Bagelson and Owl404 have been talking about dropping it on the alternative the Gdocer’s are using ATM while drive is shit. There’s 4 places to talk about DD right now. Here. The Google Doc comments doc. The troll free alternative doc that M1anus set up over at the google docs. And the Discord chat I set up TWO DAYS AGO, because google docs is shit atm. He hasn’t said a word here AFAIK, he hasn’t said a word on the normal google docs. M1anus’s troll free doc is behind right now, but he hasn’t talked at all on that, nor has he said he would in the past, he left that up to M1anus to manage. And the discord chat (which I’m assuming he’s talking about here), has been around for two days, and has very little use atm. Neither Bagelson or Owl404 have used it.

So BASICALLY, he’s bullshitting everyone here. Unless he has some super secret document only he knows about where he reads Bagelson’s message, he’s a troll. JUST IGNORE HIM, if Bagelson doesn’t announce it, he won’t drop it, and if he does drop it, someone would pick it up anyways, though I highly doubt he would drop it after putting all this work into it. And I seriously hope he won’t.

On another note, feel free to join the discord chat. https://discord.gg/0rpvaM5jSpkZ2Xwc

Anyway, thanks for clearing that up!

    • From what I’ve read, Bagelson is having issues accessing the drive and it’s frustrating him. I don’t see any part where he said he’ll be dropping the translation.

Can you post the paragraph where you got this information from?

  7. Heart literally sank reading those blasphemy comments about DD getting dropped. I would agree with later comments if Bagelson/owl/piggy bottle and others (love all you guys btw) was gonna drop it they would announce it. End o the day there doing of their own back and don’t “owe” us readers anything. Thanks again guys and look forward to further releases.

  8. Well would like to spend a few words on something that’s been bugging me for a while. Altought it’s true that baegel and everyone don’t owe us anything and absolutely are not obliged to explain anything to us, i do thing that would be very nice of them to communicate with us or at least, maybe, tell us what we should or shouldn’t expect. This would save tons of pointless speculations and i don’t think that would be a great burden to them. Said so, if i said something that could sound offensive or missed things like blogs etc where they comunicate things i apologize. (If something like a blog exist pleas let me know, thank you)

But I agree with you. The may not owe us chapters but seeing as we are a community built around their work they could at least drop in and tell us shit. But even just saying that I feel the neckbeards readying their mighty keyboards to defend their translation Lords from the evil wizards who speak in kind curious words.

      • Dude, first of all its not whiteknighting neither you nor I are entitled to free chapters. Second, as stated by others bagel’s Doc is acting up. If you actually took the time to look around the site instead of complaining, you would know he has a forum and a doc. Both of these places can be used to communicate with him. Now don’t be a butt hurt retard and actually do thing the proper way.

        Like

    • The current problem is that the traditional way to receive info from bagel is from the google doc which has been down for the around the last month I believe and in that time although Piggybottle has dropped by the comments here, there hasn’t really emerged a true alternative for communication. The comment section here has always been more of a chapter response area than a true place for interaction with bagel. Even the one doc that is up, the chapter progress one, doesn’t seem to completely up to date so I think even the most up to date readers are in the dark and unless Bagel is prepared to make major changes in how he does things I don’t see that changing

      Like

    • Maybe if you read the comments you’d notice there’s someone trying to update people about releases coming or not as much as possible.
And as long as someone is talking about the progress of the next chapters, it means they’re at least being worked on.
So take a chill pill, the project isn’t being dropped…Bagel and Piggy are on it, even if I have no idea of where Owl is at the moment.
That being said, I would like to remind you that Bagel studies, while Piggy is in the army if I recall things right, unlike other translators that turned it into a full time job or still, have a job with fixed hours that lets them translate everyday. So appreciate the time they give us all.

hm, eh, ma hongjun misunderstood slightly, lol! but hm—- this’ll help. if he shows he can stay away from chenxiang, it’d also show that he’s not just chasing her for the sake of it, which is probably the problem chenxiang is facing. i mead, just from the way ma hongjun acts, it’s hard to tell if he’s sincere or just playing, i’d say, to chenxiang. this’ll be good. and aw— mubai so protective of his brothers! such awesome friendship, i’m so touched—-!

  10. I don’t really like Bai Chenxiang, she is way too haughty. She thinks she’s amazing but when confronted by people who actually are amazing (Shrek Seven Devils and Spirit Hall’s top disciples) she can’t even compare.

And sure, she might not like Ma Hongjun, but she doesn’t need to be such a harpy about it. She could just say that at the moment she isn’t interested in a relationship with him and then just treat him cordially. Fatty is actually pretty amazing once you take his appearance out of the question and he’s been treating her well, so her acting like he’s some kind of rapist is really not cool. Fatty shouldn’t be licking his lips though, but even still, how much grievance has he caused her really?

If Ma Hongjun turns skinny and suddenly she’s interested in him, I’m going to lose all respect. He should find a girl who can appreciate him for who he is, not just his exterior. The writer seems to have the intent to have them end up together though, so let’s see how Bai Chenxiang fixes her behaviour.

    • Nah man, if you look at how fatty is like then any decent girl would run far away from him. Ye he is tallented and has på spirit. But thatas about it for the positive.

      Fattys negatives is:

Perverted. Will fool around with alot of girls, and still does even after his spirit got cured. Not that big of a deal but its a deal braker for most girls…

He is ugly and fat…. the dude litteraly dont need to eat all that much and can easily lose weight but he dont..

He is persuing her in a wierd and annoying way. Like going to her grandpa and ask to marry her without asking her. Liking his lips after she held his mouth and such.

Like dude… i like fatty and all but no decent girl would ever go for him lol .

      Like

    • Well, she has already told him quite clearly that she wasn’t interested. He went to her Grandfather to ask for marriage. How would you react if you told someone you aren’t interested in them and they go ask your parents to marry you? I don’t think I would stick to being polite since that person wouldn’t appear particularily interested in my opinion or wishes.

And what about the fact that Fatty started pursuing her purely because of her appearance? Yes, by now he ist genuinely interested in her, but if she was fat and ugly, he wouldn’t even have looked twice at her. So why is it okay for him to care about appearance but not for her?

Als, I must admit that it seriously bothers me that he is courting her by lying to her and misrepresenting himself. So why don’t you ask for him to fix his behaviour?

And I don’t think that it is so strange for a girl to get scared when she realizes that a guy who is pursuing her pretty aggressively and who does seem quite lewd, is actually very much stronger than her.

And just to get rid of a bit of my frustration on this situation: Fatty is a fat, ugly, lewd guy who doesn’t have a very high opinion on women (see one of the earlier chapters where it was said that he only treats Xiao Wu, Zhu Zhuqing and Ning Rongrong differently because he sees them as brothers. Brothers, not even sisters) and he is interested in a beautiful, pure woman. Anybody else sees that as somewhat unequal? Just to avoid being misunderstood: I don’t mind his appearance or his sexual activity. What I do mind is his opinion on women and that I consider it pretty unfair that the girls have to be pure while nobody cares about whether a guy is pure. I seriously wonder what the reactions would be if a sexually active woman were pursuing Tang San (the fact that he has Xiao Wu nonwithstanding).

I think I could make my peace with this match if Bai Chenxiang somehow lost her beauty or her purity (or both) and Fatty still cared about her. Because that would show that he actually cares about her, even if she doesn’t quite live up to the standards expected of a woman (which would only be fair, since he is asking exactly the same of her)

      • this shit right here is what i think in almost any single novel that features some bullshit sexism or harem.. The last chatpers with fatty has been painfull to be honest.. And lets not forget about the last 10 chapter of ATG over at wuxiaworld.. jesus christ the cringe and sexism was simply to much. Wish the chapters was never translated lol..

Its like this stupid idea that yea, we are in the ancient china where women were discriminated against. But that was only because they were weaker physicaly.. Now that we are in a fantasy world where everyone has equal chance to become strong (excluding noble birth and advantages from family) it makes zero sense that women are discriminated against because everything is based of off strenght.

It just shows what a piece of shit the author is to be honest.. Like yea, you write an interesting and fun story. But please, keep your shitty views to yourself.

There.. now i got to went.. time to read some more ATG hope it ends soon lol.

        • @ Both of you, this author is CHINESE, Are you aware of just how chinese people view women at all? People in China during the times when they were only allowed to have 1 child, if it was a girl, would be abandoned just to try again for a boy. Super common over there. Any man wants a beautiful girl, it’s just how shit works. If in your mind you ever thought, Damn, i want some super fat super ugly hag, you’re just lying to yourself. If you find the girl that i just described and things click between y’all and you marry her for her personality you know damn well you are just SETTLING because YOU CAN’T GET A HOT ONE.

So seriously like get the fuck over how butthurt you are. it’s a story written by someone from a whole different culture than you with a whole different set of values completely. Like fatty’s such a criminal for wanting a beautiful girl. HE IS TRYING TO CHANGE. He’s trying to be sincere like truly trying. He’s not lying to get her, he’s just trying not to let her get a worse opinion of him than she already has while trying to get her to sincerely develop something for him. Just watch the development and chill out

          • Firsty: yes, I am perfectly aware of the fact that many societies (not just the chinese) view women as inferior to men. I do not agree with that view and that was precisely what I expressed in my comment. I disagree with the views presented in the situation between Fatty and Bai Chenxiang and even if they are perfectly normal in the society the author comes from, I still disagree with them. My comment was a criticism of these views in general, whether they are present in this story, in this comment section or in any given society. I will speak up against them no matter where I encounter them and for what reason.

Secondly: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Did you ever consider that there might be people that seriously don’t care that much about appearance or whose standards for beautly are vastly different from yours or from the currently accepted social norm? For example, being overweight was considered beautiful in many societies during certain periods of time. The current beauty ideal of thin women would have been viewed as ugly. Although, to be honest, since I am female I can’t really comment on male mating behaviour. Maybe you are right and all men care about is appearance. It wouldn’t really raise may opinion on men in general.

As I said before, I disagree with the set of values expressed here. And I do consider Fatty presenting himself as a pure gentleman lying. If he doesn’t want to talk about his past, fine, that would probably hurt his chances. But what he does is, he lies about his past, by calling himself almost as pure as Tang San. And also, I never said that Fatty was wrong for being interested in her. He can be as interested as he wants. What I did disagree with was people looking down on Bai Chenxiang for not wanting him. If it is okay for Fatty to want a beautiful girl, why is it not okay for Bai Chenxiang to not want an ugly guy?

            Like

          • Sigh… you simply dont get it do you? I said that it maks no sense for women to be discriminated against because this fantasy World is based og power. So when you still force your shitty believs on women in to the story then that is poor writing and says alot about the author..

Now u said that it was ok for fatty to want a beautifull girl since everyone wants one you are 100% correct. But does that mean that its wrong for that girl to want a good looking boy?

And like I and the other person before me that was annyoed with fatty said. He is fat, ugly, perverted, lying, and in general unwilling to improve himself for a girl he says he likes..

And in wat world is fatty “truly” trying to charge? He keeps on lying, he is still fat, still perverted and still unwilling to change and even gets angry at her for not liking him.

            Just give up dude

Personally, I don’t really see why you are insulting me for stating my opinion, which is that Bai Chenxiang is being treated pretty unfairly in some of the comments, because some people deny her the right to reject Fatty or view her as arrogant because she does. That is my opinion an I don’t see why I have to be insulted for it.

            • You seem like one of those girls who would say. “I don’t date ugly guys” but if we took away all your make-up and the such, I bet you’d look like an ugly guy. You are applying you’re own post modern views to a story written in China, where once upon a time having a daughter in China was a bad thing (they still don’t really like it) but killing off babies is frowned upon and even China fears global backlash to a degree. Lastly, all the SSD saw the change in attitude at the end of the chapter that Fatty was showing, he is willing to change and if you’d been paying attention in the story you’d see that. But she refuses to give him any opportunity to prove himself and constantly maintains only negative thoughts about him. That’s says a lot about her character as well. She may be sexual purer compared to fat, but in ability, intellect, strength of Spirit and strength of heart Fatty rises above her. She is a judgemental narcissist, she thinks we is so much better than Fatty, when in reality the SSD will eventually hold the word in their hands and in all honesty I hope Chengxiang comes crawling back to Fatty only to get denied by him in favor of a slightly less pretty but more powerful and genuinely kind women. Not the rat with wings women Chengxiang is. Fatty deserves better.

              • Firstly: I don’t know, whether you are referring to me or to idk, but if you are referring to me (if not, please ignore this comment):
                1) I don’t particularily care about the looks of any person I might be dating. Yes, there are things I would consider more attractive or less attractive but generally they have little to do with the common beauty standards (and I have so far never met a person I would consider ugly). And by the way, I almost never wear any make-up. Make of that what you will.
                2) Yes, I am applying my own views on a story written in China. Which other views do you think I should apply to it? As I said before, I am not judging the author for his views, I merely disagree with some elements, and especially with some of the things said in some of the comments. And the views expressed in the comments are probably not from chinese people (correct me if I’m wrong, but if I were chinese, I wouldn’t be bothering reading an english translation, I would just read the original). So why is it wrong for me to disagree with people who are looking down on Bai Chenxiang for things that I would consider a right for everybody – for example rejecting a suitor? She doesn’t like Fatty. Period. She doesn’t have to and it is okay for her to express that. Fatty keeps pursuing her nevertheless. That is okay as well, if he can deal with being rejected repeatedly. But she doesn’t have to like it, does she? Or would you like it if a person you rejected repeatedly kept pursuing you rather aggressively – especially if it is a person you don’t even like? (And to be honest, nobody likes everybody else). And even if Fatty were the greatest person in the entire universe, she could still dislike him and it would be okay.
And why is she required to give Fatty an opportunity to prove himself? Does Tang San have to give Hu Liena a chance to win his heart? Do you have to give every single person who is interested in you (no matter you personal preferences) a chance to win your heart? Or is it okay to just say ‘Sorry, I’m not interested’ once in a while?
And about reading the story thoroughly: she already had a somewhat better opinion of Fatty a few times. Usually that lasted about five seconds before he did something that made her opinion of him worse than ever. Why exactly is that her fault? (And yes, Fatty might be trying to change for her. But how exactly is she supposed to realize that if he lies to her and claims he was a pure gentleman to begin with? He isn’t even honest to her, how am I supposed to expect that he is going to be honest with her?)
As for Fatty’s merits: I agree on the ability and strengh of spirit part. However, so far, I didn’t have the impression that Fatty was particularily intelligent, so why are you so sure that he is more intelligent than her? And please explain Fatty’s strengh of heart to be, because I haven’t found it yet.
And just to refer to the situation in this chapter, which started this discussion in the first place: (for the sake of the argument, I will now assume that you are male. If you aren’t I apologize) Just imagine, you were in Bai Chenxiang’s place. I will now assume (as before, for the sake of the argument) that you are an attractive, reasonably talented and intelligent young man. You are, aggressively, pursuied by an ugly, fat woman, who, however, far exceeds you in terms of talent and strengh (and who is pretty active sexually speaking). You are now in a situation where you are travelling together in a confined space. She falls asleep and ends up sleeping more or less on top of you. First question: would you be disgusted? If not, then you are apperently one of the people who don’t pay that much heed to appearance and I respect you for it. If yes, why are we still discussing? You just admitted that you would feel the same as Bai Chenxiang if you were in her situation. Let’s continue the situation: you wake her (rather roughly) and cover her mouth to keep her from screaming out and waking everybody else. Her reaction to this is rather obviously lewd. In this moment you truy realize the difference in strengh and that she yould basically do to you whatever she wanted. Would you be scared?
You don’t have to answer any of this, but just think it through. And if you are arguing that the situation is so diffferent: why? I merely switched the male and female role (although there is one big difference: it is far easier for a man to rape a woman than the other way round, so women are, usually, more scared of rape than men. Quite naturally in my opinion).
                3) Even if Bai Chenxiang is being somewhat arrogant: Dai Mubai is being described as very arrogant and Fatty often behaves quite arrogantly as well. Why don’t you look down on those two? Because they are strong? Well, Bai Chenxiang could probably beat all of them in pure speed. So in this area she is better than them. That doesn’t justify being arrogant? Yes, I agree. What does? Nothing, in my opinion. Self-confidence, yes. Arrogance, no. Unfortunately, the majority of the main characters is, or at least was, arrogant one way or another. Ning Rongrong overcame her arrogance. Dai Mubai and Fatty never did. In my opinion that actually makes Ning Rongring the most admireably member os the SSD.

                • Something tells me l’m tossing a pile of meat into the troll cage, but l’ll do so nonetheless. Be advise: a wall of text up ahead.

                  1. Being feminist has nothing to do with or about what you wrote. Neither is where you are from.
                  2. Like most women, some men and all post [modern] feminists (male or otherwise) you make the fundamental mistake of calling ‘equality with benefits’ ‘equality’ rather than ‘inequality’.
And l’m talking strictly as a mathematician: this –> = <– sign goes both ways. Hence when you want certain privileges to one side (women are protected by men etc etc on the stories, and don't even get me started on RL laws regarding certain rights women have and men don't) you're actually looking for inequality between genders (as am l, matter of fact. l honestly think a natural, relatively balanced, system of inequality should be in place rather than the oh-so-righteous "equality"). So you need to truly decide whether you want equality, or inequality.
2.5. Before you go puffing your chest and go "excuse my for being born a woman" remember that men can say much the same when you ask for privileges only for women but when men get some that are design specifically for them it's discriminating.
                  3. don't go into the extremities of yelling "rape rape" for 'winning' a "cross-gender" (is it, really?) debate, because you'll be no more accurate and it'll be more propagandistic than the above nicking you a 'nazi'.
l've personally met more (2) men who were raped than women (0) and it's a wide consensus among law and welfare authorities in several (l would dare say most) countries that the statistic regarding male rape victims is far from reality due to several reasons (one would be the "how can a guy not enjoy sex and classify it as rape?!?" misconception, which leads to the unstated beliefe that "men can't be raped", another is the shame \ social implications associated (which exceeds that of women) which leads to men refraining from posting a complaint etc etc) – and that before you filter out the many vindictive\opportunistic false rape complaints filed by women (the fact that some rape complaints are proven to be false is an undeniable fact). Add to that the fact that in some countries (like mine) there are NO negative consequences for a false rape complaint ("in order to not deter women from complaining") while the mere media coverage can ruin a known person's career well before a charge has even been filed in court, let alone proven\dismissed.
3.5. And how is this "do men or women rape more?" question even relates to wheather you support Chenxian or Hongjun? In the story-world it is acceptable that you get a parent's approval before you marry (all other couples in the story got it, including older generations and with the exception of Grandmaster and Erlong – for obvious reasons). Have you read the Dark Elf trilogy? You don't judge a story (or a storyteller) by the morals presented in the fantasy world of the story.
                  4. Chastity is overrated. As such, the sexual chronicles (in my modern view, since you are judging by those) of a partner are largely irrelevant. If you insist on judging with it in mind (according to the moral ethic in the story, which does take it into account), kindly be congruent and consistently judge the entirety of the matter in accord with the story moral ethics.
                  5. Regardless of how you think of yourself, even if you are certain you "judge people according to their personality" you're merely deluding yourself. You only talk to them and begin to know them because they 'seem' nice, or 'smart' or 'funny' or whatever. you judge based on an external glimpse their assumed 'character' and only afterwards if you like said glimpse you get to know them better. First impression is just that and has nothing to do with how highly you think you don't judge by it. At least in Xianxia they're [slightly] more open about it.

                  • 1) You are completely right about that one, I was merely responding to certain names I was being called. I mentioned my nationality because german speaking countries do have a special view on Nazism (due to our history), and I was being called a Nazi.
                    2) I have no interest in ‘Equality with benefits’. As far as I am concerned, equality means good as well as bad and I have never quite understood why women, for example, women do not have to do civil or military service at the age of 18. And, just for the record: the whole men have to protect women thing does annoy me. I don’t want any additional benefits for women. As far as I am concerned, you can get rid of all those benefits, provided, you also get rid of the disadvantages. So, no I don’t want privileges for women and I never said so. I don’t want any privileges based on gender.
                    3) Why is it more propagandistic? And the only reason I mentioned rape is because to me it was understandable why Bai Chenxiang was scared of Fatty doing precisely that. And it is true that men can be (and are) raped as well and I apologize if my post gave of the impression of me negating that fact. But, correct me if I’m wrong, male rape is also usually commited by other males as far as I know, which is the point I was trying to make. To my knowledge (again, correct me if I’m wrong) most perpetraitors of rape are male.
And I completely agree with you that there are much too many rape victims who do not dare file a complaint (and it is highly possible that there are more males than females in this group).
I also agree that there are false complaints, which is something I can neither understand nor condone (first because of the damage it does to anybody who was truly raped and loses credibility due to the fact that there are false complaints, second because to me it is not understandable how anybody could want to ruin another person in the way a false rape complaint does (I hope, this sentence makes sense)).
                    4) As for how it is related, see above – I merely wanted to state why I can understand Bai Chenxiangs reaction.
And no, I have not read the Dark Elf Trilogy. And as I said before, I am not judging either the story or the story teller. I was answering to a comment I was disagreeing from. And, in my opinion, I can disagree with the world views presented in a story without judging either the story or the story teller and while still enjoying the story (which I do, otherwise I wouldn’t be reading it)
                    5) Yes, it is. Which is why I am complaining about the fact that it is viewed as important for women (in the context of this story) and not important for men. And it ist true that I put to much importance on this detail.
                    6) I never said that I don’t take first impression or appearance into account. Of course I do, everybody does. The only thing I did was disputing the assumtion that ‘I was one of those girls who doesn’t date ugly guys’. So yes, first impression does matter a lot. I never disputed that. I disputed that first impression only consists of appearance and the claim about my manner of coosing potential partners.

                    I hope, I didn’t miss anything.

Anyway regarding to 5 – after all the comparisons of male beauty between Oscar, Mubai, San and other male characters throughout the story (and other stories), you cannot say it isn’t viewed as important. You can overlook this inconvenience but that’s a totally different story.

And again speaking as a mathematician, you have admitted (and in writing! says the lawyer) to be exactly ‘the girl who doesn’t date ugly guys’ (in the empty manner in case you haven’t had a date yet, and in the full manner in case you did). Since we’re enjoying ourselves here, l’ll leave you with a homework assignment – figure out where and how you did so :-).

                    • True, beauty is being viewed as important in the story. In which case it bothers me even more that some people look down on Bai Chenxiang for not wanting Fatty because it is ugly. Because to me it means judging with double standards. They are okay with Fatty’s behaviour ‘because it fits the norms presented in the story’. But they are not okay with Bai Chenxiangs behaviour, even though it also fits the norms presented in the story. As you said before: either stay within the views presented in the story or stay completely out of them.

And since I brought up the point (this paragraph can be ignored if you want, since it mostly consists of a repetition of things I said before), here my opinion of the situation, without taking the values of the world of Douluo Dalu into account: I dislike Fatty, mostly because it was stated before (as far as I understood) that he mostly views women as sex objects and that’s it (exept for his ‘female brothers’, who are brothers and not women to him) and I dislike the way he is pursuing Bai Chenxiang, admittedly mostly because he lied to her about his past and his character. And while rejecting Fatty based purely on his appearance is not really consisted with my values (or ideals, if you will) and doesn’t raise my opinion on Bai Chenxiang, I still feel that she is being treated somewhat unfairely in some of the comments (because of what I stated above).
I hope I am not going off topic here.

And I must admit that I cannot find where I have admitted that I am ‘the girl who doesn’t date ugly guys’ – could you give me a hint?

        • Now now, relax on those reins a little, cowboy. Xianxia and wuxia being what they are, you can’t really judge the author for the views of his characters or even the inclination of the world at large. I mean, in terms of sexism and gender inequality, DD can’t even hold a candle to stuff like ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ and ‘The Witcher’. That doesn’t make George R. R. Martin or Andrzej Sapkowski terrible human beings. It just means that those fantasy worlds tend to reflect some set of archaic social values inherent in many pre-modern societies (and, let’s be honest, some post-modern ones).

And in terms of xianxia, from what I’ve read so far DD is pretty kind to the ladies. Oftentimes I see female leads relegated to the background, but the women in the Shrek Seven Devils play a fairly substantial role, and come to think of it, all the primary antagonists so far – Bibi Dong, Qian Renxue, Hu Liena – are all female. In these kinds of stories, the MC is often the author’s mouthpiece, and Tang San’s more modern views about the Fatty/Chenxiang situation have been made readily apparent. It’s that silent struggle between the old and new schools of thought that lies at the heart of many such stories.

I have never read ATG so I can’t judge on that one, but as for Ma Hongjun, he’s always been a character with a great many personal flaws. But then, if Dai Mubai had been fat and ugly then perhaps he would be similarly looked down upon by readers for his lascivious past. In the end, I feel the reason for this little plot arc is to see whether or not Ma Hongjun can surpass his past self and change for the woman he likes, and for the rest, it’s up to Chenxiang to either accept or reject him. After all, his evil fire is vanquished, and they are going to an incredibly dangerous place. A place where I don’t think fatty will have much opportunity to exercise his lewdness. Like the other six Shrek Devils, he will likely need to change or die in many different ways to be able to stand against Spirit Hall in the future.

So, just hold your horses and wait and see.

          • I know that the author is chinese and that his views in that area might be vastly different from mine. And I still disagree with them. I’m not judging him, I am just saying that I don’t like it. (And I’ve never read ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ or ‘The Witcher’, so I can’t really comment on that. But if gender inequality is worse over there, than I would complain just as well. Still without condemming the author, but saying that I, personally, dont like it and think that it isn’t fair.) And I think that you are completely right about these noval reflecting views inherent in many pre- and post-modern societies (Which I personally think is shown pretty nicely when I see how many people think badly of Chenxiang for not reciprocating Fatty’s feelings). Which is why my text was not only a criticism of the situation in the story and of how some people view this situation, but also of society in general and of how women are still treated, even in many ‘modern, western’ societies. In my opinion, as long as the fact that a woman had variing partners is a valid defence in a rape trial, it shows that women an men are still treated unequal and my problem lies precisely there.

And yes, I do agree that this novel does treat women a lot better than many similar stories would. And while ‘better’ is certainly, well, better, in my mind it is not good enough. In my mind, anything but equal treatment of all genders is not good enough. (And yes, I am still reading the story, so obviously it doesn’t bother me that much. But it still bothers me enough to write a comment on the topic).

And, by the way, I don’t think any better of Dai Mubai than I do of Fatty. In some ways I think worse of him. But I can accept the way the situation between him an Zhu Zhuqing played out. Even though I still don’t like that it is alsways the males who have a lascivicious past. Why can’t it be the women for once? Why do women always have to be pure?

Also, I have to say that I like your interpretation of this arc. Looking at it this way is certainly refreshing and makes me come to terms with the situation a lot better. Especially if Bai Chenxiang doesn’t end up being the evil guy if (and only if) she ends up rejecting Fatty. But if he honestly changes for her, I guess I could come to terms with the situation, just as I could come to terms with the situation between Dai Mubai and Zhu Zhuqing. But I would still prefer if something happend on the island that would make Bai Chenxiang somewhat less perfect.

            • Note: ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ is the series of fantasy books upon which the HBO series ‘Game of Thrones’ is based. Make of that what you will.

I definitely understand where you are coming from wanting gender equality, though I have always held the importance of mutual respect over equality. Equality seems really simple on paper, but it is an incredibly nebulous concept in practice because let alone between men and women, there isn’t any equality between any two men or between any two women either. Some are pretty while others are ugly. Some are strong while others are weak. Some are born with the ability to influence and lead those around them while others… aren’t. For instance, in DD it is said there are ten billion people on the continent, and that there are about a hundred thousand spirit masters total. Which means that one in every hundred thousand people has power far greater than the other 99,999.

It is simply the truth of life that no two beings are created equal, and any perceived inequality between two large groups is the result of the ensuing cultural and genetic imperatives from all these billions of unequal beings banding together to create a society. As a result, those that feel disadvantaged by society in this manner don’t really want equality, but rather the respect they feel they deserve, and ‘equality’ in this equation can only be taken to mean the state in which everyone is happy where they are. Which is impossible.

Which is why I extol the virtues of personal freedom and unconditional respect as most important, so that even those perceived to be in higher standing treat others sincerely. For example, Tang San exhibits this sense of respectfulness clearly in his dealings with those above and below him in the hierarchy of the world of DD, which is why I enjoy him so much as a character.

              Like

              • I agree with you that complete equality can neither exist, nor ist it desirable. However, the kind of equality that I would wish for is very close to what you call personal freedom and unconditional respect. As a woman I want to be able and allowed to make the same choices a men could make and not be judged for it. The same goes for any other members of any groups that are considered a minority. That the group I was born into does not determine the choices I am allowed to make. And yes, I know that I am being idealistic and that this is somewhere between difficult and impossible. But if we don’t try we will never get anywhere. Which is probably what you meant.

And I also agree that I like Tang San as a character because of his sense of respectfulness.

(And I know that Games of Thrones is based upon A Song of Ice and Fire. But I have neither watched nor read either series.)

I can’t help feeling sad for Fatty. It seems the price of his first class Evil Phoenix spirit is really too high. He is fat since young because of it. His way of dealing with women has been influenced/shaped by his spirit.

Shui Bing-Er didn’t seem to have to pay such a price for her Ice Phoenix spirit (chapters 105-106). Moreover she is beautiful (Skywater Academy accepted only beautiful women).

And this is a fantasy novel where the ocean is green yet the sky is still blue so the molecular structure of a lot of things must be different which would be hard to believe it was still livable by humans so science is necessarily a necessity when arguing about what might happen

Each of the Seven Devils has grown across difficulties. They suffered a lot, but they had a lot of chance too. Except Ma Hongjun, all of them live now without any big flaw and share love with another one (Xiao Wu choosed to sacrifice herself).
He doesn’t have their luck and he still has a long way to gain love, because of his past.

  15. I just wanted to thank Bagelson and co. for their efforts thus far. Compared to most of the translated novels on wuxiaworld, the translation quality here is among the best. But lately I have been finding it hard to enjoy the story with this kind of sporadic updates and especially the lack of communication (with the exception of Piggy, who comments on here once in a while). I am not being entitled or anything because I understand that the translators do this for fun and I have no rights to expect anything from them. I don’t expect them to maintain a consistent release schedule because obviously their lives take priority but how hard is it to type a few words to let people know what’s going on. That sounds like common decency to me. I do hope that the translators make up their mind whether they want to continue or drop the project, which is totally fine if they no longer feel like it, so that someone else can take over.

I can wait as long as i need to months, years, or decades. I have other things that are just a tad bit more important than wondering all day what the heck is going on with the translations. Anyway! There are a lot of people that come to the site, check if there is a release. And if there isnt they move on to other things without leaving a comment. But when there is they read and say thank you and move on all the same. To those people i thank you.

Plus the Google Drive has been a bitch, not being able to access it makes me not feel like translating anyway. But if you all want DLDL to be dropped so much then… we will see about that as well I guess.

      • That’s quite childish to threaten dropping DLDL based on what some people have said, considering all the people who frequent the site, enjoy the translations, and have been defending the translators when people like this spout crap.

        Like

        • Well, to be fair, all the translators are probably pretty annoyed that everyone assumes they’re dropping it because they haven’t heard much from them. They have their own lives, translating is on their own time, and google drive has been a complete B**** lately, to the point where you can’t even access the comments doc for over TWO WEEKS at this point. Considering this site is run (to my knowledge) by a separate group of people to host Bagelson’s work, with his permission, and the original place to view the novel is still (or is supposed to be) google drive, they really have no reason to post here. Of course, Bagel has started using this more since it was made, posting his teasers here, but I’m pretty sure all the hosting of DD is done by a separate group.

Frankly, it would be nice to get a clear update with all the commenter’s debating whether they’re dropping it, or even outright stating it with no proof. But, as the google drive is completely useless atm, and that’s where Bagelson usually makes his announcements, that probably why no ones heard anything except from the occasional comment from Piggybottle.

TLDR – The translators have a right to be annoyed, they’re not F***ing dropping it you trolls, and while it would be NICE to get a clear update on everyone’s status, they have no obligation to do so, it’s their own damn time.

  16. This is just a suggestion, but wouldn’t it make sense to just use a different/create a new gmail account and use the drive folder for that account for chapters 200+? It seems drive just can’t handle the volume with so many people viewing/commenting. Bagelson (or whoever) could even setup the new account to forward email to his/their primary account so he could deal with it that much less. Apart from finding a new hosting solution, that seems to be the simplest answer. I don’t think drive is going to “recover” since the problem is likely due to the volume of people accessing it. But a seperate account may solve that for a while. Anyways I’m not saying anyone Should do anything, just throwing the idea out there in case it never occured to the people in charge. Regardless thank you Bagelson and Piggybottle (and Owl wherever you are) for translating these and sharing them. But especially Bagelson whose done the vast majority. If drug dealer gives you heroine and then stop for a long time, then gives you a lot in one day and then stop again until who knows when. You would just go crazy. Bagelson is just a sadist. There is a reason to think this way.

It’s a lot better, when you expect new chapter once a week for example. You know when to come and read it and then you don’t care until next week. So if translator didn’t want to torture readers, then he would just publish chapters weekly. Instead of 3 at a time and then no chapter for several weeks. Fuck that.

Take a breather & chill & also maybe if you could have a name other than “Anonymous” to signify your community outreach? & also enough with your backhanded insults & jabs these guys put in a lot of hard work & time doing something they love & thank god they share their work with us freely.! & Bagelson aint ur bitch! So stop w.e you think your doing. I appreciate the heads up Strider & PiggyBottle. So i guess when chapter 203 gets completed we’ll enjoy at least 3 if not 4 chapters all at once😀

    • I thought Owl mentioned that they did like 204 & 205 a week or so ago, and that piggy was running late on their chapter translation (which I assume by now is 203) and that is why it is taking so long.

Also I thought Bagel mentioned that there were some IRL issues that he was dealing with atm.

      —-

Either way I would like a new chapter to read, but cannot complain since I’m doing nothing (besides refreshing the page).

      • You switched between Owl404 and Piggybottle. I guess Owl ran into some time consuming stuff that’s higher up the priority ledge.

And to the Austrian above (there seems to be a limit to how many times you can Reply, maybe something to do with the tabbing in):
You said you never seen anyone who is ugly (“(and I have so far never met a person I would consider ugly)”) which means you either never dated (thus fulfilling the claim in the empty\trivial manner) or dated someone but he wasn’t ugly (because dating is also meeting).

Also – First Impression (which is imprinted in the first 1-2 seconds of interaction) is almost always visual, only. Unless you make it a habit to date pic-less people from the internet (exemplary me, but the chance we will date is 0% to none) visual impression is obtained far far before any other form of communication.

As for the deception bit – let’s get something straight: Would you truly act differently in his shoes? Do you also tell your aunt the dress she just paid through her (or your uncle’s) nose for is ABSOLUTELY HORRID?
Usually the dating process is not a continual meeting between 2 persons, but rather the continual meeting between the impressions these people put forth (because they think the other side likes it better) while said persons spend weeks, months or even years trying to break it to the other side that they are not-quite-exactly-like the impression they first gave.

  25. So, good news for the drug addicts. Bagelson is working on 203, and 204 is fully edited, just needs Bagel to review some suggestions to pick the final version for some parts.
Do not know when they’re coming out, but that’s the current situation.

  27. I think its high time, and of the best benefit for everybody if you think about passing this project to someone else bagel. Im saying that with all due respect.

      • Actually its more frustration from expecting 2-3 chapters on a Sunday and not getting it for two weeks (ie. get 1 last week, expect more than 2-3 this week) – which didn’t happen. Also, if we went with 2-3 chapters a week (starting from 2/8 – when the inconsistency kinda started), we would be at chapters 207-213 this week (209-216 next week). So before you go off with “one week” (implied “ONLY ONE WEEK”) – how about you take a look at where other people are coming from and stop trying to be the annoying knight in shining armor to rescue all translators from the vicious attackers.

After saying that – its mostly just the lack of communication from bagel to everyone (recently). He used to pop in to the comments pages and give small updates (ie. marathoned through X novel – addicted to a game – finals have arrived), but he hasn’t been there for a while (for who knows what reason – probably busy with RL stuff/doesnt want to deal with the comments of people asking for more chapters)

Thanks to Piggy and Strider for giving updates on Bagel and the status of the project – for me at least, it helps with the frustration of not knowing and to appreciate their help and work for translating.

        • Imagine for a second that you have a job working for a company that produces something. Like air conditioning systems. Your boss may praise you and give you a raise if you do your job well, or reprimand you if you perform inadequately. Having that job, you can be held accountable for the part of the process that you are responsible for, but this accountability comes with certain perks and a salary. The only criticism you come into contact with stems from a direct source; usually either your boss, manager or overseer, and when you meet the standards you are held to you don’t even hear a lot of that. Being this little cog in a machine, you don’t really come into contact with the hums and hos of the general public. In fact, people can’t even tell you’re part of the process that puts air conditioners in their homes.

Now imagine that aside from this job making air conditioners, you write stories or translate web novels as a hobby. The people clamoring for the next release will try to hold you accountable, because an online audience is like a group of customers that doesn’t pay. And just as most customers are inherently greedy, an audience is inherently impatiently waiting to be entertained. In essence, the audience likes to think that it has the same rights as a paying customer, with all the professional accountability that entails, but without the perks of a salary or a union to sustain your livelihood and protect you from undue pressure. And when this audience doesn’t get what it wants, it starts booing in your earhole far harder than your boss at your job that you get paid to do ever did.

Most people writing these sort of posts don’t write them because they have anything useful to say but rather to quell their own impatience. It’s about as useless and obnoxious as a kid in the back of a station wagon shrilly yelling ‘Are we there yet!?’

If calling people out on their impatience and lack of substance is white knighting, then call me Sir Tengou the White.

          • Theres a difference between a simple “because [ONLY] one week missed? are you serious?” and a longer explanation explaining the unreasonableness of some of the impatience shown – mr sir tengou the white [knight]

            • I don’t care. It’s just not helpful. It’s not like the translators aren’t aware already they’re a few weeks behind. So anything people say to that end simply does not add anything useful to the discussion. I’d rather be a White Knight than white noise.

  31. I can’t help but feel a little sad without releasing. I’ll wait as long as necessary. I have faith in our three translators.

Fortunatly I discover last week another story from Tang Jia San Shao. A funny one at that. It’s called Heavenly Jewel Change. It’s a story DMR must like, with a young, pervert, rascal hero.
There are already 59 translated chapters :

It’s hard to find a chapter where you don’t laugh nor smile. Look at it and enjoy yourself.

I agree with bai, ma honjun needs to do something about his apperance at least. Its disgusting how fat he is, yet wanting to be with such a beauty.
