Douluo Dalu – Translator’s Afterword

You know, little San’s afterword feels almost like a taunt at me for taking 6 years to finish this translation. But overdue though it may be, here we are at last. I imagine most readers have found somewhere else to finish the series while I’ve been otherwise engaged, but to those of you who hung around waiting for these chapters, those who are coming back to reread them here, and even those in the future who know nothing of my lapses: Thank you for reading, I hope you’ve enjoyed it.

Thank you also to those who have helped more directly along the way. FraustArrow, Jax, Asphyxia, Josh, DtAndroid, Organicity, Marcuz, PiggyBottle, owl404, ArmoredRaven, as well as a slew of editors over the years (you know who you are, and you’ve never been good at putting your names on things, so let me know if you want to get listed here as well).

In a way, translating Douluo Dalu is probably the one thing I’ve done in my life that has touched the most people, thousands or even tens of thousands of people have, or will read my silly little rehash of a Chinese web novel. That, in a sense, is very humbling.

A lot has changed in six years, both my life and the fantrans scene are quite different from back then. A time when the only centralized collection of translations was BakaTsuki, with other novels appearing like weeds across a smattering of forums and Google Documents, and the only decent way to track any of it was through a forum topic on Bato.to. At the risk of seeming curmudgeony, writing it made me realize that nothing in that sentence corresponds to the scene today.

But I figure I’m entitled to being a curmudgeon by now.

One question I was getting even before I was halfway to chapter 100 was whether I was going to continue translating the other Douluo Dalu series once I was done with this one. I figure if I said yes now I’d get lynched, but no worries on that account. I doubt I’ll ever do another full series again, but I do have a couple of series that I feel sorry for never having had any attempts at translations, and I figure I’ll block out some time for getting teasers done. I suppose I should try and get those early chapters retranslated at some point too.

Until then, thank you very much for putting up with me this far. I wish you ahealth and happiness.

– Bagelson, May 3 2020

In memory of Alice.

  5. Thank you for translating Bagel-son! Your translations was the first webnovel-translation for me when I tried looking for more manga chapters. It then led me to looking for other sites with more novels. The quality of your work is excellent and has spoiled me. Thanks for expanding my reading sphere and congratulations for translating an entire story – it’s a small club.

Time to get to reading, I’ve mostly left light novels behind by now, but this will be a pleasure.

  8. Bagelson,
Thank you very much for all your hard work over these 6 years. Though I did finish the novel elsewhere I stayed subscribed you and read every chapter you put out. Frankly, no other translator put in the love and clarity you did. I will most definitely be re reading the series now that it’s complete. I’d also like to thank you/curse you, because this was my gateway novel into the novel reading world. Since then I’ve read and am reading over 10 different novels. You created a monster lol. Much love and best wishes.

  9. Hey, Bagelson thanks for finishing, I deliberately put off the last few chapters of DD in hopes that I can finish it with your TL. The fantrans scene has indeed changed so much, for good and for bad, it feels very nostalgic now to look back, you might be the only one persisting on using G Docs nowadays.

Anyways, wish you well & thanks.

Hey I wanted to say thank you for all your hard work, from the google doc days along time ago 5-6 years? , I remember finding your translation through a comment in the old SPCNET forums, when HeMan’s translation of stellar transformations took a hiatus and Ren was still a mod. When you use do weekend updates and I would wake up and refresh the google document several times an hour. I will save your site and hopefully someday my kids will read from the same translation I read from, I think this my 2nd comment ever in the translation sites, i just usually read and remain anon, But wanted to say Thank you for your hard work, you have inspired more people than you can imagine to read and this wonderful genre and author. I hope you read this and know some random stranger and his family will be pirate reading your translation for years to come.

Douluo Dalu was my gateway series to Chinese novels. I did end up finishing Coiling Dragon first, but DD was the very first Chinese Webnovel I started reading, and it’s what got me looking into more in the first place. I stumbled across this series during a pretty rough time in my life and it became an outlet I kept coming back to. It’ll always have a special place in my heart. That was around the time you were just starting translation of volume 2 iirc, so it’s been a while haha. Thank you for translating this series. Thank you for coming back and giving us a conclusion to the tale.
Cheers to an end and a new beginning. Best of luck. Bagel love forever 😂🙏🏻

I know a lot of people were really concerned as the release schedule got erratic, especially as we were pretty spoiled with the intense release rate you had in the beginning. I knew I’d be able to read your translation to finish my first Chinese WN and I’m proud to have gone with you on this journey from a reader’s perspective. I’ve been reading a lot more and am hoping to learn to read and even speak the language in the future. Reading the story of Douluo Dalu has been gratifying, frustrating, funny bone tickling, and even heart breaking at times and I appreciate all your hard work that was put into translating every syllable and footnote helping us out to understand what was put in front of us.
Please enjoy your bagels, breads, and other carbohydrates and know that your efforts were truly appreciated by some people and I hope you have already forgotten some of the trolls and others that tried to demean your experience here. 37. Oh My Tang San, I can’t believe I missed this afterwards… I just came back to reread the end…

And yah, things did change for a lot… translating used to be a community thing and something done by fans… but now, it’s just a business.

But thanks for all these years of work.. it was tough waiting for just a tiny few chapters… and I did have to read elsewhere…

But, at the same time… isn’t that the true spirit of fan translation? It’s a project of love and community, a project for fans to enjoy at the times we can… not some sort of business that left some responsibility (that’s not being followed by some translators anyways).

To see one of the original fan translation projects that was just this way end… is quite sad…

But I am glad I was able to start my journey with you.

    So thank you.

I wasn’t sure you would really finish it, but I decided to wait for the last 8 chapters (I started waiting at chapter 328 in 2018) and if you didn’t finish it, I would had just left it at that. I stopped after the first (?) fight between Tang San and Qian Renxue as gods, so it was a good place to wait.

I could have read mtl or the other translations that were done of the last chapters, but I didn’t want to desecrate this novel and the high quality translation I got used to while reading your translation. I can’t speak about the translation accuracy as I don’t know Chinese, but reading your translation was always enjoyable.

It’s a hard thing for me to describe…

Whatever the tides of life bring to you, whatever journey you decide to go on, I wish you the best of luck and good fortune in your endeavors. Never forget that you are amazing.

  73. It’s done! Thank you Bagelson! As much as it took you to finish this, I can’t get to finish it ahaha! This is the novel that made me stop and stay in this community. I started reading it when I was in Uni and now I’ve been employed and again looking for a job. This novel grew up with me, I remember reading it in the library instead of doing my research. Thank you thank youuuuuu! This novel will always be my number 1! And I will definitely only read it here whether in the past, present, or future.

  74. I want to join the voices of gratitude for completing this translation. Perhaps I understand your feeling of regret, but I will say without any reservations that only thanks to the finished work you can look back and draw some conclusions about the story itself, without regard to the specifics of the translation. Despite the enthusiasm with which I began to get acquainted with the manga and the first chapters of the story (starting around 130), in the end, I felt the pain of having to finish this reading. I’m afraid to generalize, but Chinese literature in this case left an extremely unpleasant feeling of the absence of such familiar Western axioms of literature as an art form. Most of all, I was struck by the complete meaninglessness of the concept of the sacred in this presentation and the ridiculous smallness of what causes recognition and empathy. In this sense, I will not blame you for the shortcomings of the translation but will attribute it to the difference of cultures, which you could only overcome by re-writing the entire story. I would be interested to get to know your perception of the Chinese contemporary scene, perhaps an analysis of the changes in your perception itself. In any case, consider this translation to have connected different realities, even though it happened in my case with very mixed feelings.

  77. Most sincere thanks Bagelson! I remember waiting anxiously for all the new chapters to be released between 250-300, checking every day to see if the next one had been posted. At some point, I had accepted that there would be a long time before the entirety of the novel would finally be translated so I resigned myself to step away from the novel and come back to finish it. I didn’t know that it would be about 3 years before I realized I wanted to see how this amazing novel finished. Much to my surprise I wasn’t that much later than the completion of the translation (in the grand scheme of things). Thank you so so much for all your work these past years.
